🚨New 🦈 paper🚨 by Jack Elstner and team shows how nursery associated white sharks around San Diego responded to an anomalous tropical storm.

🚨NEW 🦈 PAPER🚨
Who would have thought that only 80 km of separation across the Straits of Florida would be enough to create significant differences in age and growth of Atlantic nurse sharks? Well… now us!

@Unpop_Science@MikeBanuch I just love it that people with no writing background see punctuation—one of my favorites too because parenthetical asides don’t go well with the parenthetical citations of academic writing—they’re unfamiliar with and immediately assume it’s AI generated
This is wild:
Last year, I spotted this critically endangered great hammerhead… in the middle of urban Miami. It wasn’t a fluke.
My colleagues published a study today showing this bay — full of yachts, crab traps, and fishing boats — is a vital nursery habitat.

What’s something specific to your career field that should be better communicated to people aspiring to that field but sadly isn’t? I’ll go first:
For aspiring STEM academics: PhD programs pay you to go to grad school, not the other way around! Surprisingly not well-known.
Trophic ecologists who work with stable isotopes I bring you a new pkg, {nichetools} - a complementary package to {SIBER} and {nicheROVER} that allows you to work with data objects created by either pkg. Check it out!

@ben_hlina@chris_harrod One question, I historically have used SIBER, and manually created functions to plot SEAc in ggplot as opposed SEA 40% CI ellipses (I face some small sample sizes in my work). I see I can manipulate p_ell but can I introduce sample size correction?
@ben_hlina@chris_harrod Thank you! First paper on great hammer ontogenetic niche shifts submitted for publication (which will hopefully happen in the coming months 🤞🏼)
Find out how project leader, @marinebiojohn , is uncovering the mystery of guitarfish diets and their niches in the food web, as he recounts his time in the field. More on his work below.

@ImTheDudeManToo@invertebabe Which also means that they don’t have to go to a school that offers marine biology as a major (mine didn’t and was nowhere near the coast). Tons of other majors can work just as well: biology, biochem, environmental science, etc
@ImTheDudeManToo@invertebabe For undergrad it really doesn’t matter all that much! It’s far more important IMO to go to a school that is the proper all-around fit (in other words will support a person and all their interests both inside and outside the classroom).
Stuck thinking about the juvenile whale shark that was found 40km up a river in Queensland in 2019 (just learned about this incident for the first time). Does anyone on here know what its fate was?
