A Landmark Victory for South African Firearm Owners and Dealers

Congratulations to National Hunting and Sport Shooting Association and The South African Arms and Ammunition Dealers Association (SAAADA) on their successful court victory in the Gauteng High Court.

The Court confirmed that the expiry, lapse or non-renewal of a firearm licence does not automatically extinguish ownership of the firearm. The judgment further held that firearms belonging to deceased estates remain assets of the estate and may be lawfully administered by executors.

Importantly, the Court ruled that licensed firearm dealers may lawfully receive firearms from owners whose licences have expired, as well as from deceased estates, for safekeeping, storage, transfer, sale, disposal and relicensing purposes.

The Court also declared that SAPS directives, policies, administrative practices and electronic system restrictions that prevent dealers from accepting such firearms are unlawful, unconstitutional and invalid. SAPS has been ordered to amend its directives and systems to comply with the judgment.

This is a significant win for firearm owners, hunters, sport shooters, collectors, firearm dealers and deceased estates across South Africa. The judgment reinforces the principle established in Minister of Police v Fidelity Security Services that ownership and possession are distinct legal concepts, and that ownership survives the expiry of a firearm licence.

Well done to NHSA and SAAADA for taking on this important matter and achieving greater legal certainty for the firearm community. Your efforts have benefited thousands of lawful firearm owners throughout South Africa

South Africa's political class would rather bury billions in the dirt than let space technology democratize the internet.

Starlink is now demonstrably more reliable than underground fiber cables.

Yet, politicians are stubbornly banking on legacy infrastructure. Because a satellite in low Earth orbit leaves no room for inflated tenders, artificial delays, or bloated municipal budgets.

This isn't a failure to understand technology; it is a deliberate choice.

Corruption is the goal, not technological advancement or innovation.

Connecting a deep rural clinic or a remote eco-safari lodge to world-class internet using traditional cables is an economic and logistical nightmare.

Starlink solves this instantly. Yet, the state blocks it under the guise of regulatory compliance.

The reality is that Starlink is a threat because it cuts out the middlemen. It is less profitable for bureaucrats.

No trenches to dig means no massive budgets to skim from, no politically connected subcontractors to enrich, and no endless cycles of repair and maintenance tenders.

When governments should be celebrating low Earth orbit satellites as the ultimate equalizer for rural development, corrupt politicians are fighting it.

They actively reject speed, efficiency, and cost-cutting because the corrupt, exploitative, and strenuous methods are where the money is made.

Advocate Chaskalson asked Professor Fikeni, with a bit of a despondent chuckle, what can this Commission do, how can they frame recommendations in a way that they will get implemented, considering that recommendations from many other Commissions, including the PSC itself, are not being implemented.

His response depressed me. 😭 He said first of all, there's no political will and administrative will to implement and follow up. No resourcing either for implementation.

Most importantly though, it's when he says, those in Treasury for example who will say "what is the cost of doing this", they should be asked, "what is the cost of not doing it".

In the security establishment, he says, the cost of doing nothing, is in the lives that are lost. The cost of doing nothing, it's not the statistics, it's the pain of every family going through the challenges that otherwise could have been avoided.

He's basically warning the Commission that there is a high possibility that their recommendations will not be seen through. They'll bank on the fact that after 3 years we would have forgotten. And life will go back to what it was.

Yho another shocking thing that Commissioner Thobakgale mentioned yesterday was the arrest of a gang affiliated to ISIS, kept at the Jhb Medium A Correctional Centre. ISIS is the dangerous Islamist group operating in Central, Eastern and Southern Africa I was so shocked! 🙆‍♀️😳

He explained how they use their gang management strategy to separate gang members to neutralize them. On 15 May 2026, the Hawks had requested that they be separated from the general prison population on security grounds. Only to discover that one of them had a cellphone and was able to still communicate and possibly coordinate activities within and outside the facility.

My goodness we are in trouble. But also those Hawks!! I don't trust anything that has to do with DPCI. It's another Unit that must be disbanded. They have been selling the country out those people, with drugs, CIT Heists, Human Trafficking, you name it. From Lebeya, Senona, all of them can't be trusted. 😢
