Looks like yesterday (Sunday) was a bit hectic in the SERPs - anyone seeing any ongoing impact? Looks to have righted itself...

AI isn't failing because the models are weak.
It's failing because marketers are feeding them fragmented identities, fraud and bad inputs.

Here's what should worry you about TikTok. Gen Z discovers products at a 47% rate, which is huge. But they also abandon cart 48% of the time. They found you, they're interested, then they get cold feet. The reason is trust. That's not a problem to fix, it's an opportunity to win.

⚡ This Week’s AI Search Reality Check: Reddit and YouTube are consistently among the most-cited sources in AI answers... but @Similarweb estimates their AI referral traffic is 10X apart 👇
Across major AI citation studies, Reddit and YouTube consistently appear among the most-cited sources, for example, @semrush's AI Visibility Index, based on 126 million US AI search prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and AI Overviews, places Reddit among the most heavily cited sources across platforms, with YouTube and Wikipedia also in the top tier.
However, Similarweb's worldwide Gen AI channel estimates (28 days ending July 16) show that YouTube received an estimated 203.5 million AI-referred visits vs. 20.3 million for Reddit, roughly 10x more. 20 million monthly visits is substantial, but these are two platforms in the same citation tier attracting very different referral volumes.
Why the gap? One likely contributor is how much value the AI answer can deliver without the click: a Reddit discussion can be quoted and summarized directly, while a video gives users a stronger reason to visit for the full demonstration or experience. Also, platform scale, integrations, query intent and the mix of AI surfaces also influence it, and since these are platform level estimates from different datasets, this doesn't establish a traffic-per-citation rate for any individual brand.
The takeaway: Citation rankings tell you where AI answers look, not where AI users go. Track citations as a visibility and evidence KPI, and referrals and conversions as separate impact KPIs. If clicks are the goal, invest in experiences whose full utility can only be unlocked by visiting: video demonstrations, tools, calculators, interactive data and downloadable assets.

I'm officially coming out of content retirement.
(Is content retirement even a thing 🤔)
Full context:
When I ran Backlinko, I was kind of a reluctant "marketing guru".
Making videos and constantly publishing content was a big reason the brand grew and eventually sold to Semrush. But I never loved being in front of the camera.
So when I started Exploding Topics, I did the complete OPPOSITE.
No videos. No personal brand stuff.
I was the ghost in the machine.
And I LOVED it.
Then I sold that company too.
The first thing I thought of when the deal went through was: "I never have to make another YouTube video again!"
Flash forward to today...
I'm getting the itch to share my ideas again.
After all, I built and sold two companies. That's not super common.
I'm also enjoying making videos for Semrush's YouTube channel. Turns out video is actually fun when you're covering topics you find interesting.
And I'm learning A TON from a side project. So I want to share all the cool stuff I'm figuring out.
So yeah: I'm back. Under my own terms this time.
👍🏻
Almost everyone gets creator marketing backwards. They pay for the biggest following they can afford and spend it all at the top. But at the awareness stage, a creator saves you about 5% of the customer journey. At the interest stage, when someone's already considering a product like yours, it's 39%. That's the whole game. So don't blow it on one giant name. Spread it across 3 to 5 smaller creators who actually live in your category, where people are already decided.

Orphan pages remain one of the most common SEO issues.
If a page isn’t internally linked, Google struggles to find, crawl, and rank it. No internal links means no clear path for discovery.
Here’s why they matter: https://t.co/N6mRl77oFI.
I've seen a lot more sites lately have content shown as "crawled-not currently indexed" in the Page Indexing report in GSC.
I wrote a bunch of my thoughts and observations, including an interesting case where a technical reason was the likely cause. However, quality is usually the culprit.
This post includes a link to a couple of tools to help you sort through your crawled-not currently indexed report.
Hope it helps!

Email marketing has a huge ROI. Roughly $36 for every $1 spent.
Yet when companies run ads, they typically run them for a paid product or service.
Try running ads specifically to collect emails.
We usually see it pay off, and it solves the number 1 problem marketers have with email... list growth.
Google released a major update to the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) in March 2026.
UCP is an open standard that enables AI agents to communicate with ecommerce platforms and complete purchases on behalf of users.
For example, when a user asks Gemini, “Find the best running shoes under $100,” the AI agent can run a search, browse products across retailers, and present relevant options. With user approval, it can then complete the purchase – all enabled by UCP.
The March 2026 update introduces new capabilities, including cart support and access to product catalogs. Google has also simplified onboarding through Merchant Center to attract more retailers. UCP-powered checkout is currently available to eligible U.S.-based merchants, with global expansion planned throughout 2026.
