A massive boiling hole has suddenly opened up in Yellowstone National Park.
On June 13, a small hydrothermal explosion rocked Biscuit Basin, located less than 2 miles (3.2 km) northwest of the famous Old Faithful geyser. Fortunately, no one was injured—the area had already been closed to visitors since a much larger explosion damaged it in 2024.
What followed was a striking display of Yellowstone’s unpredictable power. Scientists detected unusual seismic activity and low-frequency rumbling near Black Diamond Pool. Shortly afterward, the Firehole River downstream turned a cloudy, milky gray.
Park cameras captured the moment: at around 5:09 a.m., a dark plume of steam and debris erupted from the ground just north of the pool. When geologists arrived, they discovered three new vent groups and a fresh crack in the earth, roughly 61 feet (18.5 meters) long and up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) wide, filled with near-boiling water at 194°F (90°C). Rocks had been violently ejected during the blast.
Then the site transformed again. Just days later, a new vigorously boiling pool had formed where solid ground once stood. Measuring about 21 by 17 feet (6.5 by 5.3 meters), the gray pool began shooting water 20 to 30 feet (6–9 meters) into the air.
This was not a volcanic eruption. Hydrothermal explosions occur when superheated underground water suddenly flashes into steam, causing a rapid and explosive expansion that can hurl water, mud, rocks, and debris skyward with almost no warning.
While Yellowstone is celebrated for its geysers, hot springs, and colorful thermal pools, these features are the visible signs of a restless underground system full of heat, water, and pressure. The latest event serves as a powerful reminder that the park’s most immediate hazards aren’t lava flows or a looming supervolcano, they’re the sudden, violent forces of boiling water and steam hidden just beneath the surface.

This is almost 70 degrees higher than the normal temperature this time of year.
The UK and Ireland face one of the most dangerous setups for severe thunderstorms the region has seen in modern history.
Storms today will be capable of producing hail up to the size of golf balls, potentially even tennis balls, along with damaging winds. The greatest risk of an isolated strong tornado lies over Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland.
This is an exceptionally rare severe weather setup for this part of the planet.
