Now that we've moved from epidemiology to International Relations, I've written a little something on the Ukraine conflict. Much of this is based on a thesis I wrote for an MA in IR back in 2015. I'm no expert and likely wrong in many places https://t.co/XpOwnIbsI2
Similarly from Tolkien: "Gandalf as Ring-Lord would have been far worse than Sauron. He would have remained 'righteous', but self-righteous. He would have continued to rule and order things for 'good', and the benefit of his subjects according to his wisdom".
"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. Their very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be ‘cured’ against one’s will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals." — C.S. Lewis
@john_mcguirk The position of the Israeli govt a few weeks ago was the release of all hostages before any ceasefire. I wonder how many hostages would have been released if they continued with that position?
@Murray_Kinsella Could probably differentiate between jumping into a player at speed vs holding your line while charging down. Have been some harsh calls with the kicker basically running into the opponent charging down and getting the decision.
Why do people think everything you need to know in life should be taught in a classroom? Parents, family, friends all have a role in teaching you basic life skills. And sometimes you just have to figure it out as you go along.
Tom Holland didn't know he had to pay his water bill 💧
“I needed to do a lot of growing up at home ... There should be a lesson at school that's called 'Life,' which is like laundry, basic cooking. Like, I didn't realize you had to pay for your water"
He came from nothing. He conquered everything. From acclaimed director Ridley Scott, @NapoleonMovie is exclusively in movie theaters this Thanksgiving. Watch the official trailer now.
@TomOHanlon17 Yep, would recommend George Orwell's 'Homage to Catalonia' if you haven't already read it. Explores some of the conflict between anarchists and communists for example.
