From trusted source: Person on FB recovery effort said the outage was from a routine BGP update gone wrong. But the update blocked remote users from reverting changes, and people with physical access didn't have network/logical access. So blocked at both ends from reversing it.
as far as structural outages go, this FB thing is relatively minor. a few hundreds of millions of dollars lost at most. if a similar outage hit AWS, cloudflare, akamai, etc, no one's credit card would work. i expect the losses would be in the billions if not trillions.
A small team of employees was soon dispatched to Facebook’s Santa Clara, Calif., data center to try a “manual reset” of the company’s servers, according to an internal memo https://t.co/NLeUy6b7gi
After Facebook gets network back up I expect a long period of instability. Rebooting a distributed system of this size is hard. They will have cold caches and systems that need other systems to bootstrap. #hugops
Not only are Facebook's services and apps down for the public, its internal tools and communications platforms, including Workplace, are out as well. No one can do any work. Several people I've talked to said this is the equivalent of a "snow day" at the company.
u/ramenporn on Reddit r/sysadmin speculates that an erroneous BGP config change was pushed this morning, which locked out anyone who wasn't physically local to Facebook's BGP core routers:

Anyone who remembers the "fail whale" era in which Twitter would charmingly crash roughly once a week, forcing everyone onto Facebook, can probably imagine how much schadenfreude they must be feeling at this moment

This is really concerning.
This is really a #Netcrash scenery.
