On May 15 2026, Yves Sakila, a Congolese immigrant, was m*rdered by police in Ireland. About two weeks later, on June 1 2026, Chikei Rick Chow was found not guilty of m*rdering 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton in South Carolina. Both Yves Sakila and Cyrus Carmack-Belton were accused of shoplifting by their k*llers. While these two crimes happened 6,000 kilometres (3,730 miles) apart, they speak to similar experiences in the violence confronting people of African descent around the world.
For several generations, the primary framework that global Black communities have turned to in analysing their struggles has been the lens of Pan-Africanism. More recently, online English-language spaces have become more hostile to Pan-African ideas. At the same time, in French-speaking circles, Africans on the continent and the Caribbean are becoming increasingly favourable to Pan-African ideas.
