On the morning of September 11, 2001, Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, made a personal family decision that saved his life. Instead of heading straight to the office, he took his young son Kyle to his first day of kindergarten at Horace Mann School.

Cantor Fitzgerald’s offices occupied the 101st through 105th floors of the North Tower of the World Trade Center, just above the impact zone of the first hijacked plane. Because Lutnick was at the school when American Airlines Flight 11 struck at 8:46 a.m., he was not in the building. His phone began ringing repeatedly as he entered the classroom, but the calls kept disconnecting. He later learned they were from his younger brother, Gary, who was trying to say goodbye. Gary, along with Lutnick’s best friend Douglas Gardner and 656 other colleagues, perished that day.

Cantor Fitzgerald suffered the largest loss of life of any single company on 9/11: 658 employees (nearly two-thirds of its New York workforce) were killed.

None of the people working on those upper floors survived. The tragedy was both corporate and deeply personal for Lutnick.
In the aftermath, Lutnick made firm commitments to support the families left behind. He pledged that Cantor Fitzgerald would dedicate 25% of its profits for the next five years to the families of the victims and provide 10 years of healthcare coverage. The company ultimately distributed more than $180 million in support.

Lutnick also promised that every child of a Cantor Fitzgerald employee killed on 9/11 would be offered a job at the company when they came of age. Many accepted the opportunity in the years that followed.

To this day, Cantor Fitzgerald honours those lost through its annual Charity Day (typically held on or around September 11), during which the firm and its employees donate 100% of the day’s revenue to charitable causes via the Cantor Fitzgerald Relief Fund. What began as a response to unimaginable loss has grown into a broader philanthropic effort supporting victims of terrorism, disasters, and other tragedies.

We've reached a point where too many people no longer see those they disagree with as fellow human beings, but as enemies to be silenced.

That should concern every one of us.

Disagreement is part of a healthy society. Threats, intimidation, and violence are not.

No one should have to install CCTV, security gates, or live looking over their shoulder because of their beliefs, their work, or the opinions they express. No family should wonder whether the next threat is the one that will be acted upon. No child should grow up thinking that fear is simply the price of speaking your mind.

I worry every time my husband receives another death threat. You never know whether it's just another cruel message or something far more serious. That uncertainty changes the way you live. It changes how you think about your home, your family, and your safety.

Too often, people are labelled as divisive, racist, or bigoted without any meaningful discussion or attempt to understand someone's views, simply because they've expressed an opinion others disagree with or find uncomfortable.

When people are relentlessly portrayed as beyond the pale, it literally creates a climate where hostility, threats, and intimidation become normal. The media are hugely complicit in amplifying that culture.

Somewhere along the way, we've forgotten that it's possible to disagree passionately and still treat each other with decency. We've forgotten that the person across from us is someone's husband, wife, parent, child, or friend.

It's time we found our way back.

Back to respectful debate.

Back to compassion.

Back to loving our neighbour, even when we don't agree.

Because if we lose our ability to disagree without hatred, we lose something far more important than any political argument, we lose our humanity.

This has turned into an angry rant. Apologies. I admire you if you get to the end.

But @UKLabour this is all on you.

I am so utterly despairing of the mediocrity, dishonesty, lack of ideology, selfishness, cowardice, self indulgence, and complete incompetence of this government under @Keir_Starmer

400 MPs. A huge majority. But no plan. No idea. No direction. Crisis after crisis. Sleaze, followed by U- turn, followed by lies, followed by scandal. No proactive answers, just reacting day after day to messes of their own making. I'd have respect if they actually *believed* in something. But they don't. They have nothing. No strategy. Just endless platitudes which mean nothing.

Imagine having 14 years to come up with a plan and this is what we get? Imagine this being the best that Britain can do? These wasters are so obsessed with being liked, with pleasing themselves, the back benchers, their unions or other interests, they haven't the backbone or intelligence to do what's right for the country.

And the gas lighting. Starmer having the cheek to tell us yesterday he's "stabilised" the economy. The talk of inflation being "under control". They've made those things worse, under the decisions of the glorified accountant @RachelReevesMP creating utter chaos and a dire economic situation, yet not only do they not take responsibility, they tell us everything is going great.

No one feels it's great. You've raised a different tax every TEN days you've been in government. You're fleecing people until the peeps squeak. Unemployment is up. Business closures up. Borrowing costs up. Debt interest up. You've flailed around with ill- thought out decisions which belong in student politics, and are in such a bubble you don't even realise, or worse you do, and don't care.

The cabinet are a joke, the back benchers part of the lanyard class, there's barely any real world experience between them, and they prefer ideological wars with wealth instead of doing what's best for the country.

Do any of you think any of this will change if Starmer goes? I doubt it. Spending won't be reduced, the back benchers in their gilded gold plated lives will see to that. Taxes won't be reduced. Bills won't be reduced. Benefits will still cost billions. It'll be more of the same with just a different face selling it, and lying to us all.

No wonder people don't vote. No wonder those who do go elsewhere. You'd probably call them the 'far right' as that's easy fodder for you. You're so entrenched in your world view, you can't possibly talk to these disillusioned people. Just call them far- right then stay in your bubble, that's easier isn't it?

Starmer says he wants to 'get on with governing'. What does that even mean? More words. More telling us about 'change' and big ideas, when none are forthcoming. Oh, unless it's a tax rise, or more restrictions on business. Those ideas are easily thrown around. Anything that actually makes the UK economically stronger, or gives those with ambition a chance to thrive, they're nowhere to be seen.

And this is it Britain. We're stuck with them. But as far as I am concerned, and how I am feeling at the moment, @Ed_Miliband @DavidLammy @bphillipsonMP @wesstreeting @AngelaRayner @LucyMPowell @SteveReedMP @YvetteCooperMP @ShabanaMahmood @darrenpjones and all the rest of you can get in the bin.

We could have safe streets, affordable energy and transport, and decent spacious homes, and we could have secure jobs with good wages, and we could have social cohesion and functioning borders. We could have a thriving economy. In a sense, we only really have one problem. Our political class doesn't want any of those things. Either through ignorance or malice, they're inflicting more damage on us than any of our enemies. It's not going to change until we regard our political class as the enemy. They're not just political adversaries. They are saboteurs who hate us - and we must learn to hate them with equal ferocity.
