Germany’s failure to secure a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council — for the first time in decades — is a stark rebuke from the international community. THE 1982 INVASION AND THE BIRTH OF HEZBOLLAH

In June 1982, Israeli Defense Minister Ariel Sharon launched a full-scale invasion of Lebanon.

The official reason given was limited: push the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) back 40 kilometers so its rockets could no longer reach northern Israeli towns.

The real goal was much bigger: march all the way to Beirut, destroy the PLO, install a friendly Christian president, and force Lebanon to sign a peace treaty on Israel’s terms.

Sharon ignored his own his own cabinet's authorized limits. His tanks rolled straight past the 40-kilometer line and kept going until they reached the capital.

What followed was the most consequential case of military blowback in the history of the modern Middle East. Israel invaded to destroy one enemy - and ended up creating a far more dangerous one.
