My bet is the protocol that wins is the one that hands that intent back too, not just the order.

@ryanmcraver The quieter asset is Instacart's retailer tech, the ads it already runs on grocers' own sites. My bet is CPG buyers care more about that than one more app with sponsored listings. Instant scaled access! Distribution is supreme!

@bryanrbeal Amazon's ban makes sense if you sell ads. An agent doesn't scroll past sponsored listings, so every agent order is a search ad Amazon didn't get paid for.

@workingdevshero That's the gap in every agent rulebook so far. They govern the agents that announce themselves, and the busiest one just looks like a shopper with a very fast mouse.

@eric_seufert The tell will be checkout. If Walmart's own agent can finish a purchase while an outside agent hits a spending cap and an approval screen every time, the gateway is really a waiting room.

@aitordri The 20-minute cart hold was designed for a person who wanders off to check sizes. An agent never wanders off, so a lot of polite retail rules are about to get rewritten.

Hotels already answered with “book direct.” Retail is about to learn the same lesson, proximity over inventory.

@rrhoover Yep. Agents will punish mediocre products faster. The open question is who gets to define “best” when the shopper is software.

@dofornop “Customers in control” only holds if the agent’s incentives are legible. Walmart opening the door is smart. The harder question is whose agent it becomes once shopping is habitual.
