Today we are announcing a partnership with the Department of Energy to build Genesis-Science-1, an open model for scientific research. GS1 is an American open-weight AI model and governed research harness designed to complete scientific computing workflows while preserving a reproducible record of its work.

This model will be shaped by the people who know scientific work inside and out. @ENERGY is opening a contributor program for researchers, laboratories, universities, companies, and nonprofits, and we're speaking with infrastructure partners who can add training or evaluation capacity.

There’s still lots of work ahead, and we hope you’ll help us build in the open, starting with GS1.

We’re extending the Track 1 deadline for Genesis-Science-1 contributions to August 20th.

For those interested in applying, here are some more specifics around what we are looking for:

• Scientific code with documentation and research context
• Papers across stages of revision, including reviews and responses
• Experimental protocols and analysis records, including troubleshooting and failed attempts
• Negative results, replication attempts, and failure analyses
• Theses, grant proposals, and internal technical reports
• Scientific teaching materials, including worked problems and solutions

We are currently seeking foundation-stage data: scientific text, code, documentation, and structured collections for pretraining and context extension.

I'm so happy this article came out on the same day as the GS1 announcement. Thanks Julie and @TechCrunch for the opportunity to speak on it. I'll link to the article below.

While the open-model conversation has recently become a political one, rather than the philosophical or safety-focused conversation it was roughly two years ago, I think solving the underlying reason companies and developers are choosing Chinese models, namely the lack of american and western alternatives, is a far better use of our time, capital, and collective thought than trying to regulate the problem away.

That would only be a band-aid, and those motivated enough would inevitably find ways around it.

When we released Trinity-Large-Preview in January, I said that by the end of the year we'd have a much more fruitful open-model ecosystem in the US, and I'm pleased that we're already starting to see signs of that.

Since then, @thinkymachines has released Inkling, an organization and team team that carries tremendous influence. @poolsideai is moving at an insane pace with its recent Laguna models and shows no signs of slowing down. @nvidia has obviously shown the wider industry that investing heavily in open models and open science can deliver massive downstream dividends.

And we've been heads down, building toward a series of models, including GS1, that will, as I said below, “give [you] something to talk about.”
