This morning I was out lowering spills and flushing rice, grumbling that we still haven’t gotten a rain. It’s the 4th driest winter/spring in 65 years. Fertilizer and diesel keep climbing. Insurance costs are outrageous and the coverage keeps shrinking. Commodity prices don’t come close to covering what it takes to grow the crop. But here we are, doing what we’ve always done.
I was deep in feeling sorry for myself when I looked down and saw this rusty piece of metal in the dirt. I picked it up and got to thinking. My grandfather worked this same field when he was a young man. He plowed it with mules, before he had anything to his name. I stood there holding that rusted piece of iron and thought about what he handed down — not the land itself, but the stubbornness to keep working it when there was every reason to quit. Maybe that’s the only thing worth leaving behind. And maybe someday my grandkids will find something of mine out here and know I passed it on.
“Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.” — Galatians 6:9
