Every founder knows this split screen π
I'm building Geocitely, a directory of tools that help your business show up in ChatGPT and other AI answers.
What are you building? Drop it below π Let's connect.
Does ChatGPT use Bing? Partly.
OpenAI names Microsoft as a search partner, but in 2025 tests only 8% of the pages ChatGPT cited sat in Bing's top 10.
What I found more useful: it first rewrites your question into short searches. Those are what you compete for.

Agree on the prompt problem. There's a second one: how the tool collects answers. In Promptwatch's test, ChatGPT's interface and its API (web search off) shared only 25.6% of their sources. Most tools also run each prompt once a day, while answers change from run to run.
So before trusting a score, I'd ask the vendor two questions: interface or API, and how many runs per prompt? Looking forward to your KPI post.
Itβs time to wake up everyone β¦ if you want big things you need to understand big output - if youβre creating a lot of long form content aka speeches, vloggong, streaming and you understand platform and handle strategy aka being on all 10 platforms from Snapchat to substack to YouTube shorts to threads to Facebook to Instagram and having multiple handles like @teamgaryvee@garyveetv@positivityloud then you understand content at scale matters in a 2027 world π

@coreyhainesco No faces in mine since I only make blog covers with AI. We moved away from the realistic look to a hand-drawn ink style, because it kept looking like every other AI image. Won't help much if the thumbnail needs your real face though.
@Kevin_Indig Work dropping from 52% to 32% of messages is not what I'd have guessed, with how much ChatGPT gets pitched as a work tool. Is that mostly new free users coming in, since only 25% of Free messages are work?
@alexgoughcooper As a marketer still learning AI, I'm glad to read this. I'd guess a 2/10 gets to 6/10 in a few months of daily use, while marketing sense takes years. How do you even check someone's AI level in an interview?
@stacy_muur Worth asking your AI visibility tool how it collects answers. Most big ones scrape the chat interface now. API runs without web search find far fewer sources (Promptwatch saw 0 Reddit or forum citations). Does yours?
Neither yet, honestly. It's editorial against fixed criteria: what it actually tracks, pricing transparency, which engines it covers, how easy it is to start.
Prices and features come from each vendor's own page, with the date checked. hands on tests are next, reviews once there are real users.
@gilles_ac Mostly referrer in Vercel Analytics for now. chatgpt adds utm_source=https://t.co/g5kw5FrLq7 to a lot of its links so those show up anyway, perplexity and gemini are messier. my own social links all get utms so I can separate them out. you?
Almost half of ChatGPT messages are now the kind of questions people used to ask Google (48%, up from 43% in July 2024). Product and price research at work grew too. Is anyone already seeing more ChatGPT referrals in their analytics?
OpenAI just updated its dataset on how people use ChatGPT.
I went through every file and found a few surprises:
1. Classic Google query types are now about half of all messages
- 48% of all messages were Google-style questions in September 2026, up from 43% in July 2024.
- The 48% breaks down into 20% simple searches (facts, products, recipes) and 28% Practical Guidance (how-to, tutoring, health, creative ideas).
- OpenAI sorts every message into work or personal. Google-style questions make up 53% of personal messages and 38% of work messages (September 2026).
- Personal messages grew from 48% to 68% of all messages since July 2024.
- Most of the rise comes from personal messages taking a bigger share, because they're search-heavy.
2. Commercial research at work grew 75%
Among US work messages (Q1 2025 vs Q3 2026):
- "Obtain information about goods or services": 1.7% β 2.9%
- "Determine values or prices of goods or services": 0.3% β 0.7%
- "Gather information from physical or electronic sources": 1.2% β 1.8%
Surprised me: researching a subject for work fell by up to two thirds (technology -66%, history and social issues -65%, health -42%). Product and price research grew.
3. Countries that use ChatGPT more use it more for search
- The quarter of countries with the highest ChatGPT use per capita put 24% of messages into simple searches in Q3 2026, vs 16% for the lowest quarter.
- Across ~150 countries, the correlation grew from 0.30 to 0.74 (Q1 2025 vs. Q3 2026).
4. Personal use grows faster than work
- OpenAI's classifier tags every sampled message as work-related or not (consumer plans only).
- Work went from 52% of messages in July 2024 to 32% in September 2026. The data only shows shares, so work messages could still be growing in absolute numbers.
In September 2026, the share of messages that were work-related was:
- Free: 25%
- Go: 42%
- Plus: 51%
- Pro: 68%
Source: OpenAI Signals v3.0, announced in "ChatGPT's expanding world of work"
159 countries, 27 million sampled messages, July 2024 to September 2026
Thanks, really appreciate you noticing that. The dates are there because GEO tool prices change almost monthly, and I'd rather show when I checked than pretend it's always current.
And yes, rankings stay unpaid, otherwise the list is useless.
BTW what do you look for first when you land on a directory like this?
Thanks! start simple:
check that AI search bots can actually crawl your site
say plainly on your homepage what you are and who it's for
get mentioned on the sites AI already reads, like reviews, lists, and Reddit
the third one takes the longest but matters most.
What's your site about?
@Christian_Tichy thanks! most people seem to start with the pricing comparison, since GEO tool prices are all over the place. the cheap starter tools like Otterly get the most interest so far. Curious, would you check if AI mentions your brand before or after fixing SEO?
