Why “I write about…” quietly repels subscribers

If your Substack isn’t converting readers into subscribers, there’s a good chance the problem isn’t your writing.

It’s a single sentence.

Specifically, this one:

“I write about…”

This sentence shows up in more Substacks than any other and it quietly kills conversions.
Why this sentence fails

“I write about…” centers the publication on the writer.
But subscriptions are not an act of generosity.
They’re a decision.

When someone lands on your Substack, they’re asking one question:

“Is this for me?”

“I write about…” doesn’t answer that.

It forces the reader to:

Translate your interests into their needs

Guess what they’ll actually get

Work to find relevance

Most won’t bother.
