Jackie McNamara Sr. was one of the most unusual figures in Scottish football. He played for both Hibernian and Celtic, but what made him different was not only his football career.

McNamara Sr. was also a member of the Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB). He served as a trade union representative in the Clyde shipyards and was a close friend of labour leader Jimmy Reid. He sold Morning Star and Soviet Weekly newspapers on the streets and was actively involved in socialist activities.

While his teammates played cards, he was known for reading socialist books. In particular, he frequently read “The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists,” considered a classic of working-class literature.

Years later, his son Jackie McNamara also wore the Celtic shirt and became one of the club’s captains.
