Here is what I absolutely LOVE about this video:
Becky Hammon is one of the top 3 Head Coaches in the WNBA. The other two are Cheryl Reeve of the Minnesota Lynx, and Stephanie White of the Indiana Fever.
Becky is absolutely losing her CRAP in this video. She even tosses her clipboard.
Her team came out flat last night, and they were blown out by an inferior team.
Do you see that woman sitting directly in front or her, bottom right on your screen?
That’s A’ja Wilson, 4x League MVP and 3x WNBA Champion. That tossed clipboard landed right at her feet.
Observations: No one is arguing with Becky. No one is justifying their failures. No one is blaming other teammates for their errors.
NO ONE is acting as if receiving correction is beneath them.
THAT is why they are the reigning WNBA Champions.
Show me a team with a star player who refuses to be coached, and I will show you a team that will always struggle to be anything more than a .500 team.
Paging Caitlin Clark!
THIS is what LEADERSHIP looks like. I am not talking about Becky! I am talking about A’ja!
An individual who can’t be LED is not qualified to LEAD!!
One day you’ll play your last basketball game.
Not someday. One day.
And the crazy part? You probably won’t know it’s your last one when it happens.
There won’t be a ceremony. There won’t be a warning.
Just a final buzzer. A handshake line. A ride home. And eventually life moves on.
I was reminded of that tonight. Our team didn’t bring great effort or energy at practice.
As a coach, I addressed it, even though it’s easier not to say anything. Because one day you’ll wish you could play one more game. One more practice. One more tournament. One more chance to put on that jersey!! Parents and coaches who played, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
And when that day comes, I don’t think you’ll care that you lost a summer scrimmage by a lot or a little. But you might care that you gave up. That you didn’t communicate. That you didn’t encourage a teammate. That you didn’t bring energy. That you worried more about looking cool than competing hard.
Players, if your coach is asking you to communicate, be loud. Be annoying. Talk more. Bring energy. Look weird. I don’t care.
Cool is not cool. Being engaged is cool. Being a great teammate is cool. Competing is cool.
You won’t remember every score. You won’t remember every win. You won’t remember every loss. But you’ll remember the teammates. You’ll remember the locker room. You’ll remember the bus rides. You’ll remember the battles. And you’ll remember whether you gave this game everything you had!! Because one day the thing that stresses you out might be the very thing you miss the most.
So play hard. Bring energy. Be a great teammate. Enjoy the journey.
Call me annoying. Call me over the top. I really don’t care.
Players, trust me. This time of your life is a gift.
The game doesn’t last forever.
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord." — Colossians 3:23
Give everything. Every time
Not because someone is watching.
Not because you'll get credit for it.
Not because it feels significant.
But because how you work is how you worship.
“To look in the mirror and see yourself. Challenge yourself to be the very best and to always do the right thing. Never compromise your principles, never lower your standards. Whatever you do in life, have the courage and commitment to do it to your absolute best,” Pat Summitt
“We should want to share our faith. We should want our players to understand who Jesus Christ is. They should see us living that every single day.” - Rick Barnes
If this is the last time we see Joey Aguilar in a Tennessee uniform… I just want to say thank you.
Thank you for choosing Tennessee.
Thank you for bringing hope back to a position that needed it.
Thank you for winning in the Swamp.
Thank you for embracing this school and this state.
Most of all — thank you for giving everything you had for Tennessee. 🍊
Truly a VFL.
Young man,
Tomorrow, you take the field for what will most likely be your last game in Neyland. A few months ago, we didn't know you and you didn't know us. Fate moved obstacles and put you here. You'll leave here as a VFL and family for life.
We've watched you rise to the occasion every week. We've watched you give your all for Tennessee.
Tomorrow, give us all you have one last time on that hallowed ground, and we will do the same. Go be great and finish this thing off. Take the fight to them and keep it there for 60 minutes.
Thank you for a hell of an effort this year. It has been a pleasure.
“Is ‘Everything’ an answer?” Leaving it on the dirt is hard. Knowing you’re going home proud to be a Lady Vol is enough. So thankful God chose me to be your Mom. Psalm 18:32 #theeverythingschool#LVFL 🧡🧡
When did being lazy become “cool”?
Lazy workouts, lazy warm ups, lazy conversations, just lazy everywhere it seems like.
Whoever is saying lazy makes you look cool is LYING.
Being respectful is cool.
Working hard is cool.
Being on time is cool.
Caring is cool.
This was literally the highlight of my senior year! Great basketball played by both teams! It’s simply, just doing what you love! So, proud of my teammates tonight! They showed out in more ways than one! My audience is alway the one up above looking down on me he is always what I rely on! TYJ for loving me and allowing me to play the game I love! Now, let’s keep this going! Runner up to #1 ranked White County in OT is something to hold your head up about. Let’s Go!!!!
