¿Qué cuadro representa mejor a España?

El Guernica, por su proyección simbólica; El duelo a garrotazos, por su crudeza histórica; o Las Meninas, por su perfección formal. La discusión, sin embargo, suele confundirse, mezcla fama con profundidad e impacto emocional con arquitectura pictórica.

El Guernica, icono político antes que pintura

El Guernica no es el mejor cuadro español. Es el que más se ha convertido en un símbolo, como le ocurrió a la Gioconda. Su estatus no nace de la pintura, sino de la política, la Guerra Civil, el exilio, la ONU, el antifranquismo y la pedagogía oficial. Es una obra potente, sí, pero opaca, reinterpretada y vaciada. Cuanto más se le usa, menos se le mira.

El Guernica ya no es un cuadro, es una bandera. Un fetiche cultural que exige devoción, no una lectura pictórica.

Goya, la herida

El duelo a garrotazos es brutal, directo e incontestable. Ahí está España, dos hermanos matándose sin moverse del barro. Goya no grita, sentencia. Pero retrata la España del abismo, no la del orden. Nos muestra el trauma, no el tejido. Es el espejo de lo que nos duele, no el modelo de lo que somos.

Velázquez, la forma que nos sostiene

Sin dramatismo, sin propaganda y sin necesidad de explicación se encuentran Las Meninas. Velázquez crea una imagen donde conviven el poder, el arte, el tiempo, el espectador y el pintor. Una obra que no es solo pintura, sino todo un ecosistema. España está ahí entera, el Rey, la corte, el oficio y el orden simbólico.

No hay histrionismo ni tragedia. Hay forma, jerarquía y presencia. Donde Goya nos golpea y Picasso nos señala, Velázquez nos sostiene.

Guernica es el mito moderno, un icono global, símbolo útil, es un cuadro convertido en cartel.

Goya es el espejo roto, nos recuerda el barro.

Pero Velázquez es la pintura española misma, arquitectura visual, inteligencia formal y soberanía plástica.

Por eso, si hay que elegir el cuadro español, no es el que más duele ni el más citado. Es el que mejor representa lo que fuimos capaces de construir.

Y ese, sin duda, es Las Meninas.

It was a great honour to represent HE President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, @officialABAT today in Accra, Ghana, at the Africa Health Sovereignty Summit, dedicated to advancing a continental health architecture that is resilient, self‑reliant, and globally respected. Convened under the leadership of Ghana’s President, HE John Dramani Mahama @JDMahama, the Summit seeks to place Africa’s voice at the heart of a reimagined global health governance architecture. At its core is “The Accra Initiative,” a bold framework to redefine how nations, institutions, and partners engage with the health and wellbeing of the African people.

Over recent decades, global health has registered undeniable gains: child mortality has halved since 1990, deaths from HIV and AIDS have fallen by more than forty percent since 2000, and more than a billion people live healthier lives through expanded access to water, sanitation, and clean air. Yet these gains are fragile. Reduced donor funding, recurrent pandemics, growing non‑communicable diseases, and a demographic transition that doubles Africa’s population every twenty‑five years expose the limitations of a system that has relied too heavily on external generosity. The task before us in Accra is to establish a new foundation for health sovereignty, one that is authentically African and globally relevant.

The expected outcomes of this Summit are clear. First, to articulate a continental consensus that health must be seen not merely as a sector but as a driver of human capital, economic productivity, and resilience. Second, to align political leadership, institutions, and financial instruments behind that vision so that Africa is no longer a passive recipient but an active architect of global health governance. Third, to frame a pathway for investment, industrialization, and innovation that secures Africa’s place in shaping solutions for its people and for the wider world.

To reach these goals, I put forward twelve specific ideas for African leaders and friends of Africa to consider in reasserting health sovereignty for the continent and for other regions with similar realities. These include renewing strategic alliances with Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean to rebalance the inequities of global health governance, and shifting decisively from narrow disease‑specific interventions towards prevention, wellness, and resilient systems rooted in African priorities. They also include a continental charter on health data sovereignty, ensuring that what is generated on African soil is governed by African institutions and applied first to African needs.

Health sovereignty will also rest on stronger domestic financing, built through innovative resource mobilization and the empowerment of African institutions such as the @AfDB_Group and @afreximbank to design and deploy sustainable financial instruments. Trade and industrialization must be harnessed, using the @AfCFTA to create a continental health market, stimulate local manufacturing, and harmonize regulation. This goes hand in hand with the protection of African intellectual property and indigenous knowledge, the review of biosecurity agreements to guarantee equitable benefits, and the continued consolidation of the @AfricaCDC in its essential mandate.

Other directions include the establishment of a continental health workforce that can be mobilized rapidly in times of crisis, the codification and recognition of our Continent’s diverse knowledge systems, and a structured engagement of the African Diaspora so that its skills, resources, and networks become central to Africa’s health transformation.

These ideas are not aspirations; they are the foundations of sovereignty, aligned with the @_AfricanUnion Agenda 2063 vision of an integrated, prosperous, and healthy Africa. The Summit is a launchpad for this generational agenda, placing African agency at the center of global health and forging new solidarities with partners worldwide.
