Every year on my birthday I like to help an animal charity! This year for #Valko I’d like to help The Seacrest Wolf Preserve! They were evicted from their home and need our help to build a new sanctuary where wolves can thrive.

In 1975, there were 13 Puerto Rican parrots left on Earth. Every one of them lived in a single patch of rainforest on a 35-mile-long island.
The species had fallen from an estimated million birds when Columbus arrived in 1493. Five centuries of deforestation, hunting, and habitat loss had compressed the entire wild population of the only native parrot in the United States into one small forest in the Luquillo Mountains.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service began a captive breeding program at El Yunque in 1973 before the last birds were gone.
The work was painstaking: collecting eggs from wild nests, hand-rearing chicks, releasing birds back into the forest, installing nest boxes where old hollow trees no longer existed, managing predation from pearly-eyed thrashers competing for nest cavities, treating disease outbreaks in a population with almost no genetic buffer.
By 2017, there were roughly 200 wild parrots spread across three forest sites. Then Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico on September 20, 2017, two weeks after Hurricane Irma. The storms shredded the canopy at El Yunque. Of the 56 wild birds living there before the storm, one survived.
The program restarted. Birds were released again. Wild pairs began nesting again.
As of 2025, there are approximately 250 wild Puerto Rican parrots alive across three forest sites, with another 469 in captive breeding aviaries. The wild population is breeding on its own and producing chicks that have never been inside an aviary.
