This is Professor Roland Fryer on @triggerpod discussing the reaction to his paper, particularly its findings on police use of lethal force.

He received death threats, required police protection (ironic), and was suspended from the Harvard faculty over a handful of jokes that supposedly created a “hostile work environment.” His research lab was shut down for good measure.

The old Twitter before @elonmusk bought it, flagged and suspended accounts simply for posting the paper, branding it as hate speech.

They had endless tolerance for Arday’s lies.

They went after Fryer for speaking the truth.

A new Equifax Canada survey of over 1,500 adults finds:
* 1 in 4 (25%) expect they can only afford the minimum monthly payment on their credit cards
* Another 7% expect to fall behind entirely
* 29% are putting more on credit than last year just to cover essentials like groceries and living expenses
* 40% are spending more overall than a year ago

Canadian leaders have responded to the disturbing rise of attacks on Jewish synagogues and community centres with strong condemnations, new funding, and promises of tougher enforcement. The response to the widespread arson and desecration of over 100 Christian churches over the past five years has been far weaker. Few national leaders have spoken out. Dr. Rodney Clifton points out that fewer than 4% of church arsons between 2021 and 2023 resulted in charges.

Violence against any religious community is unacceptable. Equal protection under the law requires that attacks on churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples receive the same serious response.

I saw the Arday scandal and initially assumed it was just another identity politics-focused social-science professor caught publishing junk. I largely scrolled past.

The story sounded familiar: a fabricated CV, soft-science expertise, oppression-and-oppressor narratives with his own identity at the center, plagiarism, an autogenerated boilerplate resignation letter, years of celebration by media outlets, accusations of racism and even police involvement directed at people who questioned his record, and veneration by university authorities and academia at large despite shoddy scholarship.

But the Arday affair is more revealing. The deeper story is how universities select people for their symbolic usefulness, manufacture prestige around them, and then treat that symbolism as proof of merit.

Arday is a model of the woke movement. He is a young, feminine-looking Black man whose image and presentation matched exactly what academia wanted to showcase, while his work reinforced standard sociological narratives about identity and oppression that universities also wanted to highlight. Cambridge, as one of the highest-ranked universities, appointed and celebrated him because he appeared to be the ideal emblem of that movement.

Every other university had lower-ranked versions of Arday.

Universities across academia sought to emulate Cambridge by elevating their own identity-politics favorites. I even remember seeing websites from Chinese universities that displayed a token white or Muslim guy smiling in a lab surrounded by Chinese students.

The pattern was the same. The institutions could identify someone who perfectly matched the preferred image. Most universities simply selected people with the right identity who were willing to play along and perform the role of the model oppressed person.

I would argue that this pattern was even worse in the hard sciences. These professors were not publishing easy-to-target, dubious social-science theories. Instead, they repeated the same buzzwords and said the same things real scientists do, claiming they were curing cancer or studying mitochondria. They were promoted as star scientists by administrators and their media teams despite producing little or no meaningful work and, in some cases, publishing almost nothing while their laboratories remained largely inactive.

This is much harder for the public to detect. They claimed to be conducting serious scientific work, but their function within the university was to provide the face of an oppressed group. Meanwhile, they consumed resources, wasted years of students’ lives, left behind poorly trained graduates, and denied opportunities to genuinely productive scientists.

The larger scandal is that academia selects people for their symbolic usefulness and then treats that symbolism as proof of merit.

To understand just how irredeemably messed up academia is, compare the differences in how Cambridge treated Jason Arday and how Harvard treated Roland Fryer.

One is a black sociologist; the other is a black economist.

At this point, we are all very well acquainted with Jason Arday’s insane fabrications, plagiarism, and less-than-stellar research record. Yet he became the youngest black professor in Cambridge’s history at 37.

Now look at the case of Roland Fryer.

He produced rigorous, data-driven research, published extensively, and ran a major institute (EdLabs) at Harvard.

He doggedly pursued the truth on one of the most charged questions in American public life. His landmark 2016 study titled “An Empirical Analysis of Racial Differences in Police Use of Force” examined millions of encounters and officer-involved shootings.

It found that there were no racial differences in the raw data or after controlling for circumstances. In some datasets (notably Houston), blacks were actually less likely to be shot once the encounter was underway.

As you know, this finding directly contradicted Black Lives Matter’s core orthodoxy that police systematically and disproportionately kill Black men out of racial animus. It was not only in vogue at the time; it was literally religion.

Roland Fryer and his data were guilty of blasphemy.

Harvard launched investigations into allegations of verbal sexual harassment and a hostile work environment in his lab. The process produced a two-year unpaid suspension, the permanent shutdown of EdLabs, and severe restrictions on his ability to advise or supervise.

All this was investigated by a kangaroo court under Title IX. The recommendation for his alleged failings was sensitivity training, yet a faculty panel escalated it into career-crippling punishment. Fryer has said he was unfairly targeted because of the political inconvenience of his results.

The contrast between how the academy treated these two men shows you how deep the moral rot is.
