I love getting out to the Centers where the action is, hearing from those doing the work, and especially admiring them as they do the work.

What the pictures don’t show is the @NASA team, along with our industry partners, working hardware for Artemis III and even Artemis IV. We have core stage III in the VAB and RS-25s engines have started to arrive. There are multiple Orions being assembled and tested, including preparations to mate the improved heat shield for Artemis III.

Take a moment to think about this.. there are people working at @NASAKennedy and other NASA Centers right now, touching the hardware that will soon carry the astronauts of Artemis III and Artemis IV. They are working on the spaceships that will help return astronauts to the surface of the Moon 🇺🇸

Before 1904, every autumn in the Appalachian mountains came with a harvest that cost nothing and fed everything...

One in four trees in the forest was an American chestnut. Families gathered them by the bushel from the cabin door — roasting them, drying them, grinding them into meal, feeding them to the hogs that would carry the family through winter. The timber built barns, fence rails, and cradles. The tannin cured leather. Nothing on the hillside went to waste.

Then a blight arrived from imported nursery stock in New York City, and within a single generation, four billion trees were dead. The harvest that Appalachian families had counted on for centuries was simply gone. No warning. No replacement. Just absence where abundance had always been.

The American chestnut blight arrived in the United States around 1904 and spread at roughly fifty miles a year across the eastern forest. By 1950, an estimated four billion trees were functionally gone. The American Chestnut Foundation has spent decades crossing blight-resistant stock in hopes of bringing them back — and the first truly resistant saplings are being planted in these mountains right now.

Nobody wants to be the one to say it's over.

The ivory-billed woodpecker, the largest woodpecker in North America, nearly the size of a crow, was last conclusively documented in 1944. In the decades that followed, much of the forest it depended on disappeared. Most biologists concluded the bird was gone. But the search never stopped.

Arkansas, Florida, Louisiana. Grainy videos. Sound recordings. Enough possible sightings to keep the question alive, but never enough to close it.

In 2021, the US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed declaring the species extinct. Then more blurry footage surfaced from Louisiana. The decision was delayed, then delayed again. Even now, the agency has not made it final.

Some ornithologists think there may be a few birds left in remote swamp forests, surviving because the places they inhabit are so difficult to reach. Others see the searches as a kind of grief, a refusal to let go of a bird that vanished before most people alive today were born.

People called it the Lord God Bird, because that was said to be the reaction when one appeared. No one has documented one conclusively in more than 80 years.
