Back home after the 21st European Speechwriters’ Network conference in Oxford - inspiring, friendly and fun. Looking forward to the next one already! #esnbnc
On @BBCRadio4 …. ‘Britain on path of being sick man of Europe. We are on a path of economic doom unless we renegotiate Brexit terms… we need honesty now…’ says Guy Hands.
Let’s sing it from the rooftops, one and all. The democratic mandate was NOT for Boris Johnson as individual, president or even mayor. That is not how parliamentary democracy works. God help us all if the prime minister doesn’t understand that!
I’m struggling now. He’s even more awful than our most eviscerating criticisms allowed. You kind of knew he was but you hoped, because you are patriotic in the purest sense, that he couldn’t be. That when push came to shove the ‘system’ would finish him. It hasn’t. Bloody Brexit.
The sacking of Michael Gove is not going down well in the Conservative party. One former Boris Johnson ally tells me: “Sacking Gove is revenge. But Boris is now detached from reality. He is now like Putin.”
She is absolutely right because her grammar is not “incorrect”. Her speech contains non-Standard constructions, and these are no less “proper English” than the PM’s dialect or mine. It’s an immense benefit to public life that she stands her ground n this.
Just so we're clear: Sunak, Javid and all the other Tory MPs abandoning Boris Johnson aren't acting from "principle" or "honour".
They've known what he's like from the beginning.
They're abandoning him because they now think his leadership threatens their interests. That's it.
