I'm sad to hear Gary has passed—a good man. Chicago was blessed to have two gifted media critics, Deeb and Feder. Both knew their subject matter cold. Each had a distinct style and a unique voice. They offered readers the inside dope, the story behind the story. While others re-wrote press releases, both of these gentlemen were reporters first and critics second. The gathered facts informed their opinions. They did play favorites; after all, they offered considered judgments. Those who were honest with them got a fair shake. If the moment deserved recognition, those guys gave it. They suffered no fools, hacks, or liars. "Did you see Deeb?" "Did you see Feder?" That question marked the beginning of the day for many in Chicago media.
