16 children dead.
79 injured.
All this happening in an area surrounded by KDF barracks, ASTU, NYS and some of the most elite disciplined-service facilities in Kenya.
This cannot be normal.
As a father of school-going children and a guardian to young girls, I am deeply heartbroken and angry. Kenyan parents are not taking their children to school to die in preventable fires caused by negligence, weak enforcement, corruption, overcrowding and poor emergency preparedness.
Where were the school inspectors?
Where were the safety audits?
Who approved the dormitory?
Were fire exits functional?
Were evacuation drills ever conducted?
Why are schools still operating without proper fire suppression systems decades after Kyanguli and Moi Girls tragedies?
The Ministry of Education, National Construction Authority, Quality Assurance officers, Public Health officials and school management must all be investigated.
Enough of commissions and PR statements after children die.
Anybody found liable through acts of omission or commission must be arrested and prosecuted under the law. Lives were lost.
Countries that value children enforce strict occupancy rules, mandatory evacuation drills, smoke detection systems, independent inspections and rapid emergency response integration. Kenya must stop gambling with the lives of children.
The resignation of those responsible for failed emergency preparedness within the surrounding disciplined-service ecosystem must also be considered seriously. Leadership without accountability is meaningless.
My heartfelt condolences to the families living through this nightmare. May the souls of the departed children rest in eternal peace.
HON. ROBERT ALAI
