World IBD Day: a call to arms
I’m asking our global IBD community—patients, clinicians, researchers, industry, tech and policy-makers—to rally around three clear goals.
1️⃣ Implement what already works — everywhere
We have the tools; we’re just not using them universally.
• Faster diagnosis → fewer complications
• Early, optimal therapy → healed mucosa, fewer flares
• Tight monitoring & rapid action
Equity of care: tackle cost, access, education
If we did only this, outcomes worldwide would leap forward.
2️⃣ Do all of it better
To refine every step we need modern science, tech and coordination.
• Liberate knowledge—open data, clear summaries
• Smarter trials—minimal placebo, no duplication, global reach
• Big-data + AI guidance in real time
• Shared funding & infrastructure across academia, industry and patients
The payoff: targeted therapies, smart combinations, minimal side-effects and friction-free monitoring within a decade.
3️⃣ Prediction, prevention & cure
Predict course after diagnosis—who flares, which drug, when?
Predict IBD before it starts—especially in the general population and across Asia & Africa, the next epicentres.
Prevention in the general population: better food systems, curb antibiotic overuse
Prevention in the high-risk: short-term interception with existing drugs
Cure—the summit, built on prediction and prevention.
The call
• Deliver what already works—everywhere.
• Make every step better—through joined-up research, funding and tech.
• Drive prediction → prevention → cure.
Some we can execute today; some we’re building; some will mature with time—but together it’s a message of hope.
Patients: may you get the care you need.
Healthcare teams: thank you for delivering care and pushing the field forward.
Industry, big tech, society: we need your smarts and investment.
World IBD Day is our moment. Let’s get to work.

Without diagnosis, without the right treatment Crohn’s and Colitis can be life threatening. People who experience delays to diagnosis are twice as likely to need surgery.

There is a high variation in standards of IBD care
We see this across Scotland, rest of UK and globally
The best way to improve outcomes for IBD patients is to implement what we know works to all
This involves much greater consistency of care delivery
Plenty of work still to do here
