EATING TOMORROW'S YAM
Poem by Prof. Niyi Osundare
When cutting a tree in the forest
It is the wise who watch
where it will fall;
the not-so-wise merely enjoy
the conquering edge of the axe.
There is only one yam left
in the village barn
the prodigal calls for a knife
Egypt’s total debt is estimated at over $400 billion, with a GDP around $390 billion — debt-to-GDP above 100%.
South Africa’s debt is about $580 billion, with GDP around $420 billion — roughly 135% debt-to-GDP.
Nigeria’s total public debt is about $110 billion, with a GDP around $340 billion — roughly 35% debt-to-GDP.
Yet some people keep shouting that Nigeria is the “loan capital of the world.”
To them:
Loans are Haram.
Education is Haram.
Road construction is Haram.
Power projects are Haram.
Internet expansion is Haram.
Railway modernization is Haram.
Airport upgrades are Haram.
Seaport reforms are Haram.
Dams and agro-processing projects are Haram.
Solar energy expansion is Haram.
But the same people praise countries that borrowed far more aggressively to build infrastructure and grow their economies.
The difference between productive borrowing and reckless borrowing is simple: what the money is used for.
If loans are used to build roads, expand electricity, improve transport, increase internet access, modernize ports, support agriculture, and attract investment, those are long-term national assets.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says the focus is on infrastructure that can improve productivity and economic growth across Nigeria.
Criticism is normal in democracy, but opposing every single project simply because of politics helps nobody.
Development is not the enemy.
Underdevelopment is.
Some people are no longer in any coven.
They are simply online 24/7 wailing against everything.
@UgwunnaEjikem This must be a joke.
To think Ronaldo joined in 2009 and 5 years later before they won UCL.
I would rather say it was after Modric (2012) and Bale (2013) joined that Real Madrid had the chance.. Definitely not a Ronaldo flex at all
@A_O_Richard@UgwunnaEjikem And he took him 5 years to repeat it? Damn! This even goes to show that Ronaldo cannot carry shit! Now, he left in 2018 after winning UCL for Madrid right? So, why didn't he win it with Juve? But after he left, didn't Madrid win UCL?
@BolajiAbdulQua1 @Ihunanya_chi Maybe I didn't understand you at first. So, for clarity, what do you mean with your earlier reply that the book of John contains a lot of Jesus words and why should it be John telling us what Jesus said instead of Jesus writing the book himself since he can read and write
@ennyola0015 You know Nigeria is a more of a gas rich country than oil rich.
There are a lot of gas distribution projects ongoing which when completed will solve the issue. Those building power plants are doing so based on these ongoing projects. So relax, we will get there!
@DanielRegha Cost of running a business is too expensive for a country like Nigeria seeking investors and private participation.
Too many regulatory bodies to pay, taxes, compliances and a whole lot and the Government does not care!
@Born2rule015@DanielRegha Cost reflective tariff for poor people? Do you know why all the rural electrification projects fail and don't scale? The people can't pay!!
Imagine a 5kW daily at cost reflective = 40k
For a country that it citizens spend more than 60% of income on feeding alone.
@Onsogbu@PeterObi What exactly is going to happen? Let me understand.
They would boo him or they will question him after delivering his keynote address?
Seems you don't attend conferences
@IkejaElectric@IkejaElectric
What is this thing you're doing by serving houses bills from old and deactivated accounts that must have been used by previous residents of the house address??
You know it is fraudulent to pass the bill of a deactivated account to a new customer @NERCNG
