Researching intransitivity in paired comparisons, (pedagogy in) sports analytics (courses). #GSG ๐ ๐ฉ๐ช ๐บ๐ธ
I had a great summer working with my 2 @AmherstCollege SURF students, Eric Ingram and Michael Pitts. We made progress towards replicating @neilmjohnson's work from #MITSSAC
Currently, we're on object identification using 700+ custom training frames.
Plan to continue soon! 1/2
@carterdbryant might be the second best player on the Spurs by the end of next season! #gsg
๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ Spurs fans are pretty loud in Milwaukee this afternoon! ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ
@BobbyMarks42 Unless Atlanta is trading something to San Antonio to get back their own 2026 pick, I'm not sure why Atlanta would trade a productive, elite shooter for a short center with a broken foot and two seconds.
Why would they do that?

Is this the start of a fire sale?
@BobbyMarks42 That was the sound of Sam Presti breathing a sigh of relief.
Next up for Presti: what to do with his currently projected 8th, 9th, 14th, 25th, and 37th picks this summer. (E.g. finding trading partners who will trade down and/or their future picks).

@ZachLowe_NBA โ I'll be at the Sloan Conference. Bring the tomatoes.
I've been reading NBA box scores for 30+ years and have maybe never been as personally offended by a corporation's decision than when ESPN moved the context (minutes played) TO THE END of the box score.
@wemby reaching his 95th consecutive game with at least one block (3rd longest streak of games all-time). I came prepared with a sign!

@BobbyMarks42 Can a trade be agreed to in principle using the rookie salary? E.g. agree on June 25th, sign and trade rookie on July 7th, using the rookie salary for matching purposes?
This would keep the rookie out of some of SL, presumably. I think there's also a three year minimum on S&T?
@saberpowers@RiceSmgt This is an interesting course map! Very applied (and apropo).
Mine was a little different but has a lot in common; might also overlap with your 2nd/3rd course and was an elective.

Thanks again @slbunnell, Riley, & Lisa for putting on a great course design workshop at @AmherstCollege. I focused a competition (sports/video & tabletop game/election) data science course.
It was really helpful to make a topic map in thinking about what I cover, when, and why!
@SarahLotspeich@nussisthebaum and will be checking out several donut shops in the area. I'm reading Blue Star and Doe are the places to be! More people = more tasting variety?
@rtelmore I introduced to the UC curriculum 27815 Practical R Programming (first R course here).
https://t.co/WeXfhucA3l
Hoping to make a sequel course (Advanced 27815) or two (refitted Amherst course). This book would be especially useful for the latter, but first need to make 27815 work
@rtelmore@SchuckersM I would also take one if you have more spares. I'll be at @williams_benjam 's talk (the session with Greg and Monnie, too), if that makes things easier.
I wish this had existed about four years ago; before I taught this course:

@statsinthewild0 I can't confirm it's a saying, but I think Primus played on the trope of "amoral alley cat" (see especially the cartoon after 1 minute):
https://t.co/WgMHr0NMJd
@recspecs730@statsinthewild0 A group can only have a 4th-place finisher with 4 pts if all four teams go 1-1-1 (WDL).
https://t.co/qIevJV2KDZ
FWIW, the current format assumes groups are formed relatively homogeneously, so performance prior to tournament and seeding matters (being 3rd seed vs 4th in group)
@statsinthewild0@recspecs730 Only if you could extend the tournament by several days โ if you didn't, several teams would have to play a game on suboptimal rest (possibly b2b).
An alternative use for ggplot2: designing a crochet pattern! In a new blog post, I detail a Chicago flag-inspired daisy blanket!

@johnhollinger Great outcome if it comes to pass โ
* neither team has a chip,
* continued run of parity in the NBA post-Warriors, and
* both teams led by the only 2023 World Cup players to be rostered on the 2024 US Olympic team.
