This time last year I taught Multivariable calculus. To motivate change of variables I told students you use choose the change that makes life easier. Not necessarily spherical or cylindrical. Call it the Goober space. I got the following email and responded:
@jacobsonradical I tend to say I use calculus to predict the future. With other math thatβs harder to explain. Yea youβre right. When I look at something like knot theory from the outside it looks like spells.
