@rubeishbin called around today & couldn't find anywhere with a cradle scanner but upon discussion with my mother (a librarian) found out that i could partially disassemble her library's flatbed scanner to avoid opening the books too far. so problem solved & tomorrow's project decided upon!
do any of you know how to get ok-quality scans out of books? i'd like to digitize some illustrations from some old, fragile books i own. will a big city library have scanners i can use without wrecking the binding or something like that?
