And when liberal dem soc political leaders have a dismissive attitude toward ideological clarity, this results in a dangerous blurring of concepts (e.g., saying mixed-income market-rate housing is socialism). This dangerously narrows the conceptual horizon of what socialism means
Ultimately the liberal dem soc approach to politics (personality performance) is dangerous bc it prevents ppl from developing a strong political consciousness and an understanding of governance mechanisms, & lowers the ability to distinguish b/wn revolution & accommodationism.
Be serious. Stop using glossy, over-the-top rhetoric. Speak plainly. Workshop the policy issues with the public. Explain clearly what’s blocking progress. Show who is in the way. Stop being on Tik Tok constantly. Show that you are a serious person and not an influencer.
200k MIH units with 70% market-rate and 30% low-income units & $2,500+ studios becomes a Tik Tok saying how NYC will now be more affordable—it’s a strategy that banks on ppl not reading beyond the headline & lapping up socialist rhetoric w/out critical analysis of the policy.
Instead these fake socialist political influencer electeds use entertainment & theatrical flourishes to make a positive spin of ultimately limited-impact, incremental neoliberal policies bc they fundamentally refuse to make structural changes that undermine capital & policing.
@ZedSoxs NYCHA may own the building but it’s called *privatization* because management and operations are being transferred from the public sector to the private sector. It’s this introduction of the private market that turns the concept of public housing into something else.
The constant tik tok videos, sensational and theatrical rhetoric, and performance from dem soc/democrat (political influencer) leadership are distractions from their continuation of harmful neoliberal policies that don’t meaningfully address our problems.
We don’t need the fanfare, the performance, the grandstanding, the political spin, the tap dancing, the weaponization of socialist rhetoric, the liberal political games. We need policy clarity, an explanation of how things work, the challenges, and what’s needed to make change.
@ZedSoxs Calling this privatization is 100% the correct term. Introducing private market elements, transferring ownership, management, and operations from the public sector to the private sector = privatization. PACT/RAD is this exactly.
@ZedSoxs His actions are not socialist. He’s pushing for the end of public housing as we know it in the u.s. with the continued support for public housing’s privatization.
@ZedSoxs This is the United States, not Vienna. We have public housing in the U.S. Any liberal social democrat housing model that introduces market tools is not *public housing* We have had a solution—existing Sec. 9 PH as stated in the Housing Act of 1937.
@ZedSoxs Public housing is already “mixed income.” What liberal “democratic socialists” are seeking is the introduction of high-income market-rate units to “cross subsidize” the low-income units. This is no longer a public housing model but something else.
@ZedSoxs It’s very important that we’re ideologically clear. Yes, public housing policy is socialist. When we add private market elements, the policy & concept of public housing becomes something else that doesn’t resemble true government-funded PH.
What’s bizarre and racist is the push by liberal “dem socs” to demolish and privatize public housing to then replace it with “social housing” that is market-based. This is a liberal policy, not a socialist one despite their use of the word.
@ceaweaver And what additional affordable homes are you referring to? The market rate towers in gentrified Chelsea will be MIH, with little to no genuine affordability. It’s a land grab and the destruction of a community.
@ceaweaver It most certainly is. It’s replacing direct public subsidy of housing with market-rate subsidy for developers—we are transferring our tax dollars to subsidize profit.
@mxllysworld@comradejumpshot Definitely not throw our hands up in the air in exasperation. This enables the privatization to keep happening if there’s no sustained organizing and public pressure. We don’t throw our hands up to fight for universal healthcare; unsure why that is the strategy for public housing
Beautiful new homes and updated amenities sounds good—but NYCHA residents should not have to go through PACT to get safe housing they already owed!!!!
A non-displacement guarantee is important, but tenants deserves more than promises on paper!
A “non-displacement guarantee” is not enough if residents lose real control over their homes, their rents, their repairs and their future. Promises can be written beautifully on paper—but tenants know better than anyone that paper promises do not always protect families when management changes, funding shifts or political priorities move on.
So what’s more important than updated amenities?
Section 9 low income housing, I.e public housing. Enforceable NYCHA accountability. Public land staying public. Full accountability for every dollar. Repairs without forcing residents into a new system they did not ask for!!!!!
@DanFKent@FriendsofTamika -Introducing private market elements into public housing will increase insecurity, displacement & evictions, & decrease tenant rights
-The added market-rate units will contribute to gentrification & speculation = higher prices, rents & the exacerbation of the affordability crisis
