@nciacrops It’s possible to eliminate tillage layers and compaction without compaction continuing at bottom. Warm/dry out faster via more evaporation on poorly drained soils. Mix lime to fix pH quicker. Diversify weed control. Reduce ortho P and nitrate runoff (fert or decomposing residue).
@FoulkShay We used something like this to pull a pintle with our grain truck. Clearance between the pin and the hitch was close and eliminated “slop”. We also put 1000 gal of water in a tank on the truck for extra weight on the truck. And greased wheel bearings before taking off.
Dry weather put some early stress on this @CropTechInc hybrid flex plot. Feeding a family of 36k made for some hungry hybrids. Looks like there was still plenty to go around for 22k. Interested to see how this will affect ear size by hybrid.
PSA: Height doesn't equal maturity. Ken reminds growers that the unevenness this year for most didn’t come at emergence but because of delayed crown root development, giving us plants of different heights but same maturity. Scout to make sure all get pollinated. #AgronomicMinute
Lot of fungicide questions and decisions now. Last year we saw lower disease pressure in many places, but not NE Iowa. 5th wettest July on record in Decorah with heavy rains to kick off tar spot. 2023 has started very dry, but we aren’t out of the woods yet. @CropTechInc
Surprised to find similar sized ears on the same hybrid in the same field despite a 3 foot difference in plant height. Potential may not have been lost, but risk has increased. @CropTechInc
When answering y-drop vs. coulter sidedress questions, I often refer back to this plot from 2017. Small corn, very little rain after application, no inhibitors used, and the y-drop still came out ahead at harvest.@CropTechInc
@KoubaRichard@CropTechInc If there’s a good base rate of N and good weather, it may not make a difference. Sidedressing with NH3 is kinda like using an inhibitor. It’s going to be a week or 2 before uptake. Great if you don’t need that N until August. Not so great if the corn is already yellow.
@drone_spray@CropTechInc We setup this plot to look at both methods at traditional sidedress timing. The results don’t lie. Later applications are great if there’s enough N to make it that far.
@leolillyliza@CropTechInc Depends on the whole program. V4 corn that is yellow or about to turn yellow I prefer y-drop for quicker uptake. Corn that had 50# N with planter and 140# NH3 could easily wait until V10. If it’s not N limiting at the time of application or after, it usually doesn’t matter.
