Bobba Fett without his helmet on in Return of The Jedi....

This behind the scenes photo comes from the production of Return of the Jedi, filmed between 1982 and 1983. The man wearing Boba Fett’s armor is not meant to be the canonical face of the character, but simply the suit actor in between takes.

During filming at Elstree Studios and on the desert sets in Yuma, Arizona, costumed performers often removed helmets to breathe, drink water, or talk with makeup artists and alien-costume performers. Moments like this show how practical and human the Star Wars universe really was during production. The armor looks battle worn, the aliens look otherworldly, and then right in the middle of it all is a guy in a knit hood and glasses, calmly chatting while cameras reset.

Behind the glamour of Star Wars, most of these scenes were long, technical days full of makeup work, prosthetics, fabric rigs, and costume adjustments. This photo is a reminder of how many people brought the galaxy to life, long before CGI took over much of the universe.

The original Boba Fett suit had multiple versions during Return of the Jedi, including a “stunt” armor made of lighter materials for the Sarlacc pit sequence.
