Don't misunderstand. I'm not saying there is no "personal relationship". Read 'When the Church Was Family' by Joseph Hellerman to understand how we've baptized "relationship" in Western self-individualistic-betterment.

We have oversold the "personal relationship" with Christ. We've cultivated a narcissistic, individualistic, self-help imagination for relating with God.

In this paradigm God's mission is an afterthought, community is an addendum, and holiness is "stop doing bad things".
