@spignal And then there’s the UK arguably the most stable politically but awful economic performance compared to the others. Brexit has proven far more damaging…
Back in 2010 sf had a 200,000 person lead. This is what happens when you don’t build enough (or any, really) housing.
In the last 15 years Seattle has grown by 187,000 residents. San Francisco? 3,000.
@jkwade@sundayapp_ I’ve used this in Europe (though over a year ago now) and there was no fee… terrible model if that’s what they’re doing, though. The merchant pays CNP vs. CP but the whole pitch is based on labor efficiency and delighted guests.
@conorsen It’s a very weird dynamic, bc as a recent mover from NYC, the petty crime and “normalization” of it is ridiculous. But not nearly as over the top as the media hype. SF needs to re-diversify from tech and build housing downtown (e.g. lower Manhattan post 2001)
@conorsen The comparisons for SF are uniquely tough because, IMHO, 2015-2019 wasn’t real or sustainable. Outrageously expensive for hotels and rent both, and now remote work and tech down cycle are causing unique harm. SF will be fine but it will take at least 5 years.
"Which brings me to the last key aspect to avoiding looking like a tourist in New York: the walk. Whatever you are wearing, remember to stride fast, with purpose and direction. Even if you have no idea at all where you are going." https://t.co/QzdEhjnKrs
“Well if SVB is too big to easily sell shouldn’t it have been held to a much tougher regulatory standard?”
Yes! But they lobbied, extensively and aggressively and successfully, to be treated like a small bank rather than a big one.
If the regulators had been tougher on your favorite bank that you felt had a unique understanding of the needs of your business and your industry and the bank came to you complaining about the loser bureaucrats who just don’t get it, who would you have sided with? Be honest?
Great piece from @jonathanchait.
The question now in San Francisco and elsewhere is whether urban moderates can move beyond checking excesses and put together a coherent coalition around housing abundance, school quality, and public order.

Today is a historic day. The Board just voted to make JFK Drive permanently car-free. An essential space for our residents and families that is now, a long-term benefit to this city. We still have work to do, but passing this legislation is where we begin to make real change.
RECALL ELECTION:
San Francisco voters overwhelmingly supported the ouster of three school board members Tuesday in the city’s first recall election in nearly 40 years.

I have an answer for that: if you can't staff, then you close. You don't close preemptively because you think you might fail to staff. NYC is approximately at the peak of our wave and our schools are open. You get as many days as you can, because online school is not useful.
More officials should look to how Bill de Blasio has stood firm and declined to reimpose a mask mandate, producing broadly similar results to big blue cities that did reimpose them. NYC has properly focused public and private enforcement on vaccination.
