“Johnny B. Goode” was originally released by Chuck Berry in 1958 and became one of the foundational anthems of rock and roll. In 1995, Berry performed the classic alongside Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band at the inaugural concert celebrating the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, Ohio. The performance brought together one of rock and roll's founding figures with one of the artists who had been deeply influenced by his music, creating a remarkable meeting between two generations of rock.

The collaboration had an especially meaningful history behind it. More than two decades earlier, in 1973, a young Springsteen and his band had actually served as Berry's backing band at a concert at the University of Maryland's Cole Field House in College Park. Berry arrived without a rehearsal or soundcheck, leaving Springsteen and the band to improvise their way through a set of Berry classics. The 1995 performance therefore brought the two artists together again on a much larger stage, with Springsteen returning to the role of backing musician for one of his most important rock and roll influences.
