Early career historian writing on ideas about the natural world in 19th century U.S. political culture. Teacher @QMHistory. Researcher @RAIOxford. Salfordian.
First-rate article here, hot off the virtual presses! Essential for understanding how 19th century Americans conceived of (and fought about) nationalism and citizenship.
The 4 (yes only 4) WOC on teaching and research staff in QMUL History (all fixed-term; 3/4 already axed or soon to be) have written a response to the principal’s proposal to ‘give our BAME community a voice’. @van___lim @asciampacone@QMULHistSoc@qm_ucu
Been hearing from @UCL_UCU PGTA group today about why UCL should stop making excuses and give its PGTAs fair pay and employment contracts in recognition of the essential and fantastic work they do teaching and supporting UCL's UG students.
I loathe pervasive term 'unskilled'. Are care-workers 'unskilled'? It is a callously bureaucratic way to describe such dedicated men and women. 'Low paid' yes, sometimes scandalously so, but skilled in so many ways that few of us could begin to emulate.

Letter from Leia, an outsourced cleaning supervisor at @ucl: "I clean the hallways of one of the richest universities in the world...I haven’t had a single day off for 2 years. I’ve undergone 2 major surgeries & used up all my holiday time on recovery".

This was incredible. "If a doctor is made in this building, we contributed to it. If an engineer is made in this building, we contributed to it. If a professor is made in this building, we contributed to it". Bring the workers in-house @ucl! Now!
Thoroughly enjoyable afternoon presenting my research @RAIOxford with stimulating and diverse audience questions. Thanks to everyone who showed up and to @aipsmith for organising!
