Drake Maye was under pressure on 42.9% of his dropbacks against Chicago and still played some of his best football when the pocket collapsed.
Under pressure:
• 11/12 passing (91.7%)
• 151 yards
• 1 TD
That 91.7% completion rate ties the highest single-game mark under pressure in the NFL this season.
321 yards, 2 TDs, and a loss. Maye deserved better.
@msully5433 This is one area where Henderson being a one-speed runner hurts you. He can't tempo his runs and adjust on the fly to the way defenses react.
Looking at PFF turnover-worth plays (TWPs), Drake Maye has been relatively unlucky to have so many actual turnovers this season.
Maye is second to only Tyler Shough, with 2.7 more turnover than his charted stats reflect
The positive case for NE: despite having the 2nd worst turnover differential and being one of the most injured teams in football through the second hardest schedule in the league so far, the Patriots are 4-3.
Some positive regression could go a long way as the schedule eases up.
@TatumNE0 Yep, if you go back and check replies on my tweets from that time you can see mine was not a popular opinion! Henderson was the kind of player who's easy to talk yourself into, and reportedly the Bears also would have taken him over Burden with the next pick if he fell.
Regardless, the rule here is that he has to come set for a full second after placing his hand on the ground. Obviously, that does not happen. Campbell needs to get set quicker in this situation.
Patriots are only quick snapping here anyway because the refs left 10 on the play clock after trying to call the Patriots for a penalty in a situation where they couldn't be penalized.
Ridiculously poor game management from the officials.
The refs called Will Campbell (right side on unbalanced line) for a false start for his right arm motion before the ball was snapped. Looked like the #Patriots had the third-down conversion, too.
On the Pats TD before the half, it seemed notable to me that they had some urgency to get in position to make that play. Usually, you just kneel it out there.
Feels like the Pats felt good about their odds of converting a play like that. Credit to Vrabel and McDaniels there.
@ubox59 I think it's more so about using the linebackers to cover up for weaknesses up front. This defense can't stop the run without being super aggressive against it, they're a playmaker short on the defensive line.
Thankfully, this team is good enough in the passing game on both sides of the ball that both of these issues really only show up against good teams. Unfortunately, that's who you need to beat to win a championship.
It really feels like basically all of the Patriots issues on offense and defense are downstream from the fact that they just aren't good enough in the trenches in the running game.
On offense, they just can't rely on the running game to make things easier for Maye. The best way out of those mugged up looks is to punish them by running downhill on them, but they just can't execute that. Puts all the pressure on Maye.
“That felt like watching Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. That felt like the next version of that to me."
Derrik and @davehelman_ discuss the heavyweight matchup between Caleb Williams and Drake Maye on TNF.
It's frustrating that the Patriots made a real effort to get better at running the ball and basically all the moves haven't worked out.
Hill, Gilliam, and AVT are all on IR, and Henderson just isn't panning out. Campbell and Wilson aren't bad, but they also aren't playmakers.
