For years, Human Rights Watch has turned into an institution of mercenaries, selling its services and advocacy tactics to systematically tarnish the image of targeted individuals and countries. Rwanda has long been one of its favorites.

In its most recent report, titled “Death Was Everywhere,” HRW throws around allegations of arbitrary detention, killings, and forced recruitment allegedly carried out by the M23 and the Rwanda Defence Force.

It is no coincidence that before this latest report was released, senior HRW officials had made Kinshasa their regular haunt. As a matter of fact, the organization has strengthened its engagement with the Tshisekedi regime, becoming a willing instrument in a propaganda campaign aimed at demonizing Rwanda over the crisis in eastern DRC.

Le dimanche 7 juin 2026, très tôt le matin, le Gouverneur du Nord-Kivu, Bahati Musanga Erasto, a quitté son bureau de Himbi à Goma pour entamer une tournée dans le territoire de Rutshuru, en chefferie de Bwito, afin de rencontrer directement les habitants de Nyanzale.

Lors de son adresse à la population, le Gouverneur a appelé les communautés à vivre ensemble dans la paix, à participer activement à leur propre sécurité et à renforcer les mesures de prévention contre la maladie à virus Ebola.

Il a également lancé un message aux jeunes encore présents dans les groupes armés Wazalendo et Nyatura, les invitant à abandonner les armes et à contribuer au développement de leur cité de Nyanzale, tout en leur garantissant un accueil à bras ouverts.
Autrefois considérée comme l'un des bastions des FDLR, Nyanzale retrouve aujourd'hui la sécurité et la stabilité sous l'administration de l'AFC-M23.

Les habitants ont chaleureusement remercié le Gouverneur Bahati Musanga Erasto pour sa proximité avec la population et son écoute des préoccupations locales.

Plusieurs questions relatives à la vie quotidienne, à la sécurité et au développement ont été soulevées par les participants. Le Gouverneur a apporté des réponses et proposé des solutions concrètes aux préoccupations exprimées.

La population a réservé un accueil exceptionnel au Gouverneur et à toute sa délégation lors de cette visite.

Global Witness EXPOSED 1/2

The latest claims by @Global_Witness (GW) that "Rwanda smuggles Congo's coltan" rely on pure disinformation, approximations, and on manipulated images. Our #CTGL_FactCheck team has outlined some of the elements of manipulation by #GlobalWitness:

- GW uses disinformation and image manipulation suggesting that coltan is smuggled to Rwanda using an image extracted from the UNGoE 2024 final report, which is a screenshot of a December 2023 produced video showing 60 motorbikes carrying #FDLR_Wazalendo, and loaded with bags of coltan, while fleeing M23 from #Rubaya towards #Mushaki. (p. 10 of the report, Interactive Map, Images #1, #2, #3 and full original video below).

- GW is using this image to suggest that the smugglers are #M23 or "smugglers" who are working on behalf of Rwanda. Yet in the enclosed video, we hear that these are #FDLR_Wazalendo running from M23 who are saying in Swahili (00:31-00:37): "Here are motorbikes loaded with minerals. We are leaving Rubaya and are really fleeing the Tutsi" [The "Tutsi" here means "M23"]. "Here we are in the hills of Ishasha, and here in front of us, we can see the motorbikes", "Here the situation is difficult, pray for us, pray for us!"

- GW additionally spreads a mistruth about having been on the ground in the caption of the same image in the interactive map. They write: "Global Witness has travelled with a coltan smuggler through the hills towards Goma." (Image #2). GW in other words mislead its readers about having done a field investigation for this report, but instead has relied solely on recycled false claims, manipulated information and images.

@Global_Witness, backed by the #Tshisekedi regime to produce yet another one-sided report against Rwanda, has once again been caught red handed using misleading information.

#Kinshasa’s propaganda machine relied on a screenshot extracted from a video showing mineral transporters on motorcycles leaving the mining town of Rubaya as supposed evidence of mineral smuggling benefiting Rwanda.

What they failed to mention is the actual context.

The video dates back to December 2023, when Rubaya was not under M23 control but was instead controlled by a coalition of Nyatura militias, the #FDLR, the FARDC, and Burundian armed forces.

This deliberate manipulation of facts exposes the weakness of the narrative being pushed against Rwanda. Recycling old footage and presenting it out of context does nothing to address the real causes of instability in eastern DRC.

Such tired and cheap propaganda must stop if the international community is serious about supporting peace in the region. Rwanda possesses its own mineral resources and has no need for fabricated accusations designed to distract from the failures of those who have long overseen the plunder of the DRC’s vast wealth.

The world knows who has benefited from decades of exploitation and instability in eastern DRC.

Peace will come through truth, accountability, and addressing the root causes of conflict not through misinformation campaigns.
