🚨 BREAKING: Heavy fighting in Mogadishu as Somalia slides back into civil war-era chaos

Mogadishu, June 3, 2026 — Forces loyal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, whose term has expired, attacked a meeting of traditional elders from the Murusade clan and opposition leaders including former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire, triggering clashes that killed several and wounded others.

Khaire blamed the president’s forces for the assault, which occurred as the group prepared a planned peaceful demonstration.

“While we were in a meeting with the Ugaas of the Murusade clan and traditional elders, we came under attack from forces commanded by the president whose term has expired,” Khaire said.

“The responsibility for any losses lies with the president whose term has expired.”

The violence highlights Somalia’s return to the factional instability of its civil war era. With rival armed groups mobilising amid disputed legitimacy, the country effectively has no functioning central government.

The international community has been urged to avoid supporting either side to prevent further escalation.
