How do we take Nigeria’s democracy back from “money bags”?

On Arise TV, our Executive Director, @bukolaidowu, pointed to participation as a powerful counterweight to vote buying and the commercialisation of politics.

Using the FCT elections as an example; with over 1.6 million registered voters and about 1.5 million PVCs collected, yet roughly 15% turnout, he noted that low participation makes elections easier to influence. When turnout is small, outcomes can be more easily calculated. But when participation rises significantly, the cost of manipulation increases.

He raised a critical question: Nigeria’s laws empower INEC to monitor and track political and campaign spending. How effectively is that mandate being enforced?
