(2) when citing the work of "disciplinary giants" and well-known authors, avoid praising it enthusiastically. Insiders are aware of the impact of these authors' constributions, and your impression will only indicate the recency of your exposure to the literature.

How can you as a beginning researcher develop an expert-like, "insider" identity that will appeal to disciplinary readers (examiners/ editors/ reviewers)?

(1) do not attempt to define every discipline-specific term (jargon) you introduce in your texts. Invoking shared knowledge can signal your status as being on par with the experts who are already familiar with the terms;
