At today’s #RememberSlavery Day, HE @AFTarakinikini 🇫🇯 spoke on behalf of the APG Group paying tribute to the millions enslaved and the resilience of the oppressed in one of the darkest chapters in human history.

Fiji🇫🇯 will assume the Chairmanship of one of the largest UN regional block,the Asia-Pacific Group (APG) in NY for the month of March. During the handing over ceremony today, H.E Amb @AFTarakinikini thanked H.E Amb Maria Michail of @CyprusinUN for her leadership. While seeking the Groups full support and cooperation during Fiji’s 🇫🇯chairmanship, he also acknowledged and thanked all past APG Group Chairs for their commitments and looks forward to a successful tenure for Fiji!

The Pacific Islands Region covers a vast territory of ocean expanse roughly the size of Africa. Its 18 countries consist of thousands of scattered islands, whose wellbeing and livelihoods depend heavily on a safe and peaceful maritime environment. Yet porous maritime borders, as well as a small and dispersed geography and population, leave the region vulnerable to multiple security challenges, and troublingly, the Pacific Ocean remains the largest unpoliced space in the world.
The Konrad Adenauer Foundation (KAS) New York Office, in cooperation with the Permanent Missions of the Republic of Fiji, Greece and Australia to the United Nations, convened a working lunch on 9th December to foster exchange between international experts and representatives of the UN system and Member States on current maritime challenges and identify multilateral approaches to maritime security in the Pacific Islands region.

Panelists include Mr Thomas Tödtling, Dr Christian Bueger of UNDIR, HE Ambassador Filipo Tarakinikini, HE Ambassador James Larsen and HE Ambassador Evangelos Sekeris. 

The gravity of Maritime security amongst a host of other Ocean related challenges was evident in all interventions. As such a follow up event will be organized in 2025 to build upon the outcome of this event.

The President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Wiliame Katonivere delivered Fiji’s 🇫🇯 National Statement at the Summit of the Future during 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

His Excellency emphasized the importance of global collaboration through a multilateral system that includes non-state actors, the private sector, and all members of society

Today, the #UN adopted the #MVI bringing new hope for countries like #Fiji. Aligned with the SAMOA Pathway, the Mauritius Strategy, & the ABAS Action for #SIDS, Document A/78/L.98 addresses the unique vulnerabilities faced by #SIDS, such as climate change, sea level rise, & economic challenges. It aims to ensure that development finance is tailored to meet these needs. Fiji acknowledges that while the #MVI is not perfect, it is a crucial tool to complement existing metrics and advocate for targeted support. Fiji is committed to working with the #MVI to enhance resilience and recovery.

H.E. Ambassador Filipo Tarakinikini delivered Fiji's 🇫🇯 statement during the 29th Session of the International Seabed Authority Assembly as convened in Kingston, Jamaica.
While responding to the Secretary General’s report, Amb. Filipo Tarakinikini underscored that Fiji’s policy on deep sea mining is one of precautionary pause, and that the ISA jurisdiction is the seabed and as soon as a shrimp jumps off that seabed it immediately enters into the jurisdiction of another UN entity.
Fiji urges the Secretary General to work closely, exchange and share scientific information with experts and technical panels, and those entities that have jurisdictional mandate in areas adjacent to the seabed, to ensure that cooperation are established between organizations based on the respective mandates, in ensuring robust protection of marine environment and biodiversity conservation.
In relation to the ongoing draft regulation on seabed mining, Amb. Filipo Tarakinikini echoed Fiji’s support for its development and finalization, to provide effective protection of marine environment and should apply a precautionary and ecosystem-based approach, using science-based management, and ensuring effective compliance with a robust inspection mechanism.
H.E Tarakinikini further adds that any activity related to seabed minerals should be informed by science, and must be ecologically sustainable and takes into account the BBNJ Agreement and the Paris Agreement in keeping the temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
In recognizing Fiji’s legacy at the ISA, His Excellency thanked the Organisation for its’ support on women’s empowerment on Ocean Affairs and scientific research, and its support for small island developing states in the Pacific.

The UN General Assembly adopted the modalities of the upcoming high-level meeting on Sea-level Rise and the decision on enhancing action on this urgent issue. Mr. Vueti May, Chargé d'Affaires a.i., Permanent Mission of Fiji to the United Nations, as part of TROIKA, delivered the statement on behalf of the Pacific Islands Forum, emphasizing our continued support of this important step, which has been a priority for the Pacific in view of the devastation posed by Sea-level Rise on our people and livelihood. Addressing the existential threats posed by Sea-level Rise requires collaboration for global and action-oriented solutions.

During the HL Event: “Solar Brilliance: Empowering Lives with Universal Energy Access” organized by @franceonu & @IndiaUNNewYork | Fiji thanks France and India for their help with the Int. Solar Alliance (ISA). These projects brings Fiji a step closer to archiving its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) targeted to reaching close to 100% renewable energy power generation by 2030.
