I feel like every time I go to a new event I learn something new about hosting.
Some recent takeaways:
1. If you have a projector/screen behind your panel, maximize it! Display your brand and sponsors, show the speakers’ names, the title of the event, maybe even have a presentation with the main question being asked for that topic and have someone man the slides.
The opportunities are endless, but this is great brand visibility and marketing for when people take photos of the panel (and likely post on LinkedIn).
2. Have one mic for the facilitator, and at least one for the panelists (who can share if there are not enough available)
3. You already have people in the room. Make it as frictionless as possible to join your community/ sign up for your newsletter, etc.
a. If your community runs on an application other than Slack, can you send a follow-up email through luma to get people to sign up for your newsletter there, and download another app later?
Having to download another app on the spot will have most people say “I’ll do it later” —> loss
b. Or can you add a QR code to a presentation you show above at the beginning of the panel that leads you to a linktree/linkedin/socials page?
—> increases visibility
BREAKING NEWS: SF and LA Tech Week calendars are LIVE!
You can now register for events: https://t.co/IElfyON9rg
2,300+ event submissions across San Francisco and Los Angeles
📍SF: October 5-11
📍LA: October 12-18
People always ask about the data, so a few stats:
-SF once again takes the crown for “biggest tech week ever” with 1,500+ events
-1 in 7 SF events is about agentic AI: 213 events in SF and 53 in LA are explicitly about agents (in the title or description). In 2024 there were only about a dozen!
-There are 124 hackathons across the two weeks, and the variety is huge: everything from hardware to defense, media/creative, fintech, civic/social good, etc. Everyone is a builder now.
- LA, the OG Tech Week (now in its fifth year!), has seriously doubled down on deep tech with 100+ events and lots of El Segundo activity.
Last year, Tech Week saw attendees from over 100 countries. It’s going to be a party.
See you there! 🥳
5. Do something every day to make yourself better.
Doesn't have to be a huge monumental task. Can be personally, professionally, athletically, or really anything.
As my friends in finance say, compounding 1% everyday ultimately averages better returns than 1 lump sum.
4. You're the average of the five people you spend the most time with.
You are your community.
I'd like to also include who's media you consume the most as a second list
3. Let them (+ Let me)
Shoutout Mel Robbins. Huge to reframe frustrating/annoying/upsetting situations.
Let them [do the frustrating/annoying/upsetting thing].
Let me [action i'm going to take]
2. You can just do things.
As someone who was a relentless consumer of career development linkedin influencer content (shoutout avni barman), I finally took the plunge and dm'd people on X and linkedin that I admired their work. Sometimes they will respond!! It doesn't just go out to the void
Try things you'd never think you'd get accepted for, you might just get accepted.
