@meenawong1 Is political party required to charge a membership fee? Does free registration = free membership?
@meenawong1 maybe you should find out for sure first before throwing accusations of illegal behaviors. Maybe try the registrations and see if it is indeed free?
@wakabalaplante Merely illustrating the arbitrary nature of who can vote in municipal elections. You think only allowing property owners to vote is ridiculous and stupid, but 100+ years ago people think it is the way things should be, just like many PR voting opponents think.
@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada Excuse me? Municipal election? Give me a break. Provincial & Federal, I get the argument. Municipal election? Seriously? This type of attitude is going to make me support any parties that restricts municipal voting to property taxpayers only. No more freeloaders interfering.
@GDubz_85@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada Actually no, there are some good reasons from the pro-side. All I hear from the nay-side is voting for citizens only because blah, blah, blah, blah! Security risk! Selling out Canada! Seriously, if you feel PRs are this scary, maybe you should fight to stop immigration.
@GDubz_85@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada And there is nothing preventing people from owning in Vancouver either if you really want to own for the purpose of voting. Just buy a property with other people like a timeshare and viola, you are now a property owner.
@GDubz_85@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada So what? there are barriers to become citizens too like @themediagal said. Who knows. There are PRs who has been here for 20+yrs and didn't bother to become citizens. Ask them why.
There are also renters who can buy but don't, like a lot of RE bears who sat out for 20+yrs now.
@GDubz_85@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada PR pays taxes that goes towards the services. We can also use argument to say that only property owners should vote in municipal elections since only they pay the property taxes the city collect, and also any developers since they pay all those development charges city loves
@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada yeah...that's little piece of paper really symbolize that. Tell that to the 500K+ Canadian committed citizens who work in US, HK, China, ME, Europe, etc who hasn't pay income taxes in years or decades.
@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada Lazy ass...bet you probably wouldn't ever lower yourself to talk to a PR and find out for yourself. Always expect someone else to do the work for you.
@mrdruthers@themediagal @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada You are ones who just refuse to engage in intellectual discussion on why PR shouldn't vote in municipal elections even though vastly majority of them live, work, and pay taxes here full time, aside from some hysteria about risk, and oh, they don't have a citizenship paper.
@themediagal@mrdruthers @wakabalaplante @EvaSiu21@yuenpauwoo@csiscanada doesn't change the fact it's not up to PR to decide whether they become citizens or not. Some want to and get to be citizens, some want to but can't, and some just don't want to for some reason. Regardless, a citizenship certificate doesn't magically negate all risk cited.
