This is perhaps the clearest audio of flight 175 barreling down and eventually into the south tower.

Those 2 young men, as well as millions of others who were rather in manhattan that day or watching events unfold live, knew in that instance that this was no longer an accident, and this was indeed an attack on America and it’s people.

Hundreds of thousands of people trying to reach their loved ones simply cannot get through.

There is a universal sense of fear and confusion.

A 40-story portion of the building stands for several seconds after the collapse, then falls.

FDNY Battalion Chief Joseph Pfeifer, who from the North Tower Lobby is directing firefighting and rescue efforts, orders all units in the building to immediately stand down and evacuate.

THE SOUTH TOWER OF THE WORLD TRADE CENTER HAS COMPLETELY COLLAPSED.

The entire building, all 110 floors, has pancaked into the ground. Massive clouds of pulverized concrete and gypsum rush through the streets, covering tens of thousands of people in dust and obscuring Lower Manhattan altogether.

Father Mychal Judge, chaplain to the FDNY, is struck by fallen debris and dies instantly. He is the first confirmed and identified death today, but there must be tens of thousands of dead.

The South Tower is now vibrating and creaking. Firefighters report that the building is “physically shaking and rumbling.”

They pray that it will hold on for at least an hour more so that they continue evacuations.

Fire Chief Joseph Pfeifer, in the North Tower Lobby, is distressed by the large number of jumpers he has seen.

He attempts to make an address over the building’s public address system: “Please stop jumping. We are coming up to help you.”

But the lines are cut and his voice cannot be heard.

Kevin Cosgrove, a business executive trapped on the 105th floor of the South Tower with Doug Cherry and John Ostaru, is on the phone with 9-1-1 dispatchers, making concerning comments about there being too much smoke to breathe.

He expresses fear that he’ll die, but the dispatcher assures him that there are firefighters coming up to meet him.
