This level of inhumanity is tantamount to a declaration of war. Before you blame Igbos for always feeling angry, restive and out of place in Nigeria, consider this story. As dehumanizing as Onyeka’s story is, it is only but one out of many. The worst part is no one gets to pay the prize for this level of sadistic inhumanity. Don’t even talk about the many who weren’t as lucky - sent to their early graves, mostly on account of simply being Igbo.

With every such video leaked & every mass grave uncovered of Igbo youths cut in their prime, the epidemic of mental secession from Nigeria, amongst Igbos, spreads with intensity. And no matter what anyone thinks, the natural progression of events like this imply the inevitability of this mental action becoming an unstoppable reality, in a not-too-distant future.

A so called nation that refuses to unite must be prepared for dismemberment. You can’t eat your cake and have it.

REPORT: Igbo youths detained at Wawa military barracks in Niger State are forced to plead guilty amid prolonged detention:

In a 31-page released by the United States-based Ekwenche Research Institute and the International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), it has emerged that: “At least eight Igbo Land Judeo-Christian abductees bundled to WAWA Military Cantonment in faraway Niger State in North-Central Nigeria since 2021 were recently tried under controversial circumstances including being coerced to plead guilty.”

The detainees are identified as; Chidiebere Luke Echefu, Chidiebere Christian Ugwu, Nnabuike Romanus Erikeigwe, Ferdinand Uchenna Ede, Azoribe Samuel Onu, Ndukwe Kalu Iroha, Okolo Godwin Ejiofor and Abel Onyekachi Michael, while also highlighting the case of Ozioma Elizabeth Onyeaka, who it said remained on trial after more than five years in detention.

The organisations alleged that the cases reflected a broader pattern in which South-East civilians accused of being IPOB members or supporters were transferred to detention facilities in northern Nigeria and subjected to proceedings without adequate access to lawyers, families or independent witnesses.

UPDATE: It has just been brought to my attention that this young man posted below (Chukwunonso Aloefuna from Nando, Anambra State) was abducted since 2021 by men, reportedly to be from DSS, and his location remains unknown to this day.

The person who informed me, wrote this to me: “I haven't heard anything about Aloefuna chukwunonso from Anambra. Please Sir, I have even seen him in my dream once and I was asking him that I thought he is dead and he laughed and said no, that they tried all they could for him to confess to something but he didn't. And he said that people think that he's dead and he said but see me nah sound and healthy. So please Sir do something about him”

This is indeed very sad and tragic. So, while I’m minded to activate all legal/judicial measures to locate him & defend him, I appeal to anyone with pertinent information to send me a DM. Thank you.

“Nnamdi Kanu’s new neighbours speak on ‘unusual prisoner’ in Sokoto” - By Musa Ubandawaki

Tension is gradually building across Sokoto metropolis as residents struggle to cope with the presence of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu who is currently serving his sentence at the Sokoto Central Correctional Centre.

The development has unsettled many homes, businesses, transport operators and community dwellers, with fear spreading particularly across Yar Marina, the heart of Sokoto city where the correctional facility sits. The prison is only a short distance from the Sultan’s Palace.

Many residents, including Kabiru Mohammed Gobirawa, a seasoned journalist, admitted that this is the second time they are experiencing such a situation involving a high-profile inmate attracting national attention, frequent high-level visitations and heavy security presence on a daily basis. “It is our hope and prayers that the IPOB leader’s presence in the state will not trigger another wave of fear and tension in the state,” Gobirawa said.

Nnamdi Kanu was transferred to Sokoto shortly after a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced him to life imprisonment. Justice James Omotosho, in his ruling, gave the Department of State Services DSS authority to hold him in any prison within the country, a decision many lawyers and observers have since questioned.

Following the sudden transfer, streets around Yar Marina changed overnight. Security checkpoints emerged, patrol teams became more visible, and movement near the facility was heavily restricted.
Yar Marina is also host to the headquarters of Police Zone 10 and the office of the Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG. Neighbouring buildings still bear the scars of a 2016 bomb blast detonated by a yet-to-be-identified suicide bomber which killed a policeman while he was praying in a mosque opposite the AIG office.

The Boko Haram network under the once dreaded figure Kabiru Sokoto attempted in 2016 to establish a base in the state. Another bomb was detonated that year by a suicide bomber at a divisional police station in Unguwar Rogo, killing only the bomber.

A trader, Alhaji Sani Alfa, captured the public mood. According to him, the tension does not stop people from working but it forces them to look over their shoulders constantly. “We woke up to heavy deployment around the prison,” he recalled. “At first we did not understand what was happening until we heard that Kanu had been brought here. Since then things have changed. We are doing business, yes, but with fear and caution.” Another resident, Fatima Mai Masa, said “There are soldiers, police and vehicles moving at every hour. Even children know something is happening,”.

The prison has become a point of national attention, drawing lawyers, loyalists, sympathisers and even top political figures. Last week, in a move that startled many locals, the Governor of Abia State arrived at the facility to visit the IPOB leader. The visit sent a ripple of anxiety across the city. Muchedi Dan Marina, a shop owner not far from the prison, said each visit ushers in fresh tension because the security around the area doubles instantly.

Last Sunday, Kanu received his lawyer, Dr Maxwell Opara, who visited alongside four associates. His colleague, Aloy Ejimakor, echoed the sentiment on social media, insisting that relocating Kanu had placed unnecessary barriers between him, his family and legal counsel. “He has been moved far away from everyone who needs access to him,” Ejimakor wrote.

Today, Sokoto walks with caution. Residents speak in whispers, businesses operate with an eye fixed on the prison walls and tension lurks beneath the quiet wind that drifts across Yar Marina. Security remains heavy. Anxiety remains real. And the entire city waits, unsure of what tomorrow brings or how long this unsettling atmosphere will last.

Random military operations and mass arrest of Igbo youths by security operatives has been credited for the non-enrollment of youths of the region in security agencies.

A human rights organisation, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law, Intersociety, in a latest report released on Sunday morning, alleged that over 6,000 families in the South-East were still searching for their sons, daughters and other relatives who were allegedly arrested by security  agents.

The report signed by Emeka Umeagbalasi, Lead Researcher for Intersociety and Prof Justin Akujieze, President and Chairman of the Board of Ekwenche Research Institute, Chicago said findings indicated that arrested persons were usually taken away and branded members or supporters of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, or their militant arm, Eastern Security Network, ESN.

He said the development contributed to the growing reluctance among families in the region to allow their children of military recruitment age to enlist in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“It is in totality of the above that tens of thousands of Igbo Land South-East families withdraw from giving their beloved sons and daughters of military recruitment age and academic and professional qualifications permission to be enlisted into the Nigerian Armed Forces.

“Earlier investigations indicated that about 5,000 other South-East civilians have remained untraced after alleged arrests or abductions between August 2015 and December 2019.

“Some of the missing persons were transferred to detention facilities in Northern Nigeria, including the WAWA Military Cantonment in Niger State, without their families being informed of their whereabouts or being granted access to them.

“About 70 per cent of the more than 6,000 persons allegedly missing since January 2021 were taken by military personnel, while the remaining cases were attributed to police crack squads and the State Security Service.

“These disappearances have created a climate of fear among families and has affected their attitudes towards military recruitment.”

The report urged the Defence Headquarters and other security agencies to provide details of persons arrested or killed during military operations, including their identities, locations of detention, circumstances of arrest and, where applicable, circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The organisations also called for independent judicial commissions of inquiry in the South-East to investigate alleged disappearances, extrajudicial killings and other abuses dating back to 2015.
