It gives Cabinet the power to authorize pesticides Health Canada has deemed unsafe. For “food security.” A term the bill doesn’t define.

The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment called it “cabinet overruling science.”

The pesticide industry called it a win.

Both are right.

A four year old boy was snatched in a Black Country Park in the West Midlands and left in woodland close by.

West Midlands Police have issued a description of the child snatcher:

The offender is described as being in his late teens, black, short in height and with curled hair.

He has been described as clean shaven and wearing black clothing.

Canada passed a law criminalizing the Hamas and Hezbollah flags, introduced mandatory ISP metadata retention, and tabled a Digital Safety Commission with authority to define "hatred" — all in the same parliamentary session.

Bill C-9 clears Parliament:

The Combatting Hate Act passed the House in March and the Senate in June, with Royal Assent imminent. It creates a new criminal offence for displaying symbols with intent to promote hatred, covering Nazi insignia and flags of designated terrorist organizations, including Hamas and Hezbollah. The religious expression defence has been removed, opposed by the United Church, Anglican Church, National Council of Canadian Muslims, and Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.

Bill C-22 builds the retention infrastructure:

The bill requires providers to retain metadata — call logs, location data, digital traces — for up to one year and mandates adaptations for data transfer to police and CSIS under warrant. Google said the bill goes further than Canada's allies; Apple said there is no credible way to build access that excludes bad actors; Meta flagged it could require installing government interception software on their systems. Privacy Commissioner Philippe Dufresne warned extended retention increases breach risk.

Bill C-34 creates the speech regulator:

Introduced Jun 10, the Safe Social Media Act establishes a Digital Safety Commission of three to five unelected commissioners empowered to require platforms to mitigate "harmful content," including content that "foments hatred." Civil liberties organizations note the definition is broader than the Supreme Court's requirement of extreme manifestations. Non-compliant platforms face fines up to $10 million or three percent of global revenue. The bill bans under-16s from social media, mandates age verification, and covers AI systems capable of simulating human-like relationships.

My take: Three bills in one session to make Canada fascist again.

The Carney government is constructing durable legal and technical capacity while governing through falling institutional trust and ongoing Indigenous land disputes. Palestinian solidarity organizers face immediate exposure: the Hamas flag ban is operational now, the metadata infrastructure follows, and the Digital Safety Commission will eventually decide what "detestation" means. Canada presents as the liberal alternative to the American surveillance state. This legislation closes the gap. If you needed any more proof on what you get when you scratch a liberal.

For this she was convicted with a 6 month suspended sentence and a €3,000 fine.

Today the suspended sentence was removed but the fine remains and her criminal record stays in place

• Shopify @Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke @tobi warned that Bill C-22 could become a “death blow to Canadian tech viability” and make Canada “essentially unviable for those with choices on where to build.”

• Signal's @signalapp VP of Strategy & Global Affairs Udbhav Tiwari stated, "In its current form, Bill C-22 would convert the everyday tools Canadians rely on into a sprawling, insecure surveillance apparatus."

• Apple @Apple Senior Director of User Privacy & Child Safety Erik Neuenschwander warned that Bill C-22 allows the Government of Canada to force companies to break encryption by inserting backdoors into their products - “something Apple will never do.”

• Google's @Google Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy Jeanette Patell warned that Bill C-22 “goes well beyond lawful access regimes in other G7 democracies, and risks creating new surveillance infrastructure that would introduce serious security vulnerabilities, undermine user trust and hinder our ability to innovate and offer pro-privacy technologies.”

• Meta @Meta warned that Bill C-22 could require companies to build or maintain capabilities that weaken encryption and that could force providers to "install government spyware directly on their systems."

• Proton VPN @ProtonVPN General Manager David Peterson warned that complying with Bill C-22 could conflict with Swiss and European privacy obligations. He said, “Complying with foreign surveillance orders without Swiss legal process is a criminal offence...We’ll defend our Canadian users and never compromise them.”

• NordVPN @NordVPN stated that “there isn’t a scenario in which we would compromise our no-logs architecture or encryption protections" and that it would consider limiting or removing its Canadian presence.

• ExpressVPN @expressvpn warned, “Legislation that mandates data retention or technical access, however well-intentioned, undermines the security that millions of users rely on."

• DuckDuckGo @DuckDuckGo stated that "if the bill passes, we will be forced to stop offering our VPN in Canada."
