I warmly congratulate our own Gerda Steyn and George Kusche on their respective record-breaking “up” runs in the 2026 Comrades Marathon between Durban and Pietermaritzburg.

The world’s largest and oldest ultramarathon remains an annual showcase of the heights and depths of the physical and mental demands we can traverse if we commit ourselves to a goal.

Gerda, now five-time winner, and George led a field of more than 21 000 runners who will all testify of extraordinary life journeys that took them to the starting line of this unique event and powered them to the finish.

Well done to our champions and the thousands of winners who followed.

And for those who missed the cut-off, we know that being a non-finisher in the Comrades always beats being a non-starter.

We know you will be back next year.
