I know my tweets feel repetitive but the dying in the Med is a constant repetition. Yesterday and today about 100 people drowned.
Don't look at the official statistics of IOM and UNHCR that will circulate the next days for the total death count for 2020. It is much much higher.
@JenniferAllsopp Im definitely interested in this. I work on humanitarian SAR operations and the politics of space in the EU and Im currently developing a comparative project for my postdoc looking at humanitarianism in the US borderlands
Over the Easter weekend, four boats at sea for days and in distress in Malta's search and rescue area. Passengers say people have already died. Malta, Italy, the EU refuse to do anything. This is Europe. This is our shame.
Check out the new @McMaster_IGHC Working Paper series titled "States of Refuge: Keywords for Critical Refugee Studies." My contribution to this fantastic collection explores the idea of state responsibility in relation to SAR operations in the Central Med https://t.co/jIZNPHHL93
New Working Paper Series, "States of Refuge: Keywords for Critical Refugee Studies," with contributions from Peter Nyers, Donald Goellnicht, @mb_gordon, & Sasha Kovalchuk from @McMasterU, & authors from other universities. Read the paper on our website: https://t.co/fFz9oH28V9
If you're around @McMasterU today, I'm speaking about my research on migration, border controls and the politics of the sea. The talk is titled, “Boats, Borders and Containment at Sea: Standoff Politics and EU Migration Governance in the Central Med” https://t.co/XZ4J6Ft0tw
Take a look at a piece I've had published with @ConversationCA. The article explores 'standoff politics' in the Med and the sea as a contested humanitarian space https://t.co/FPGdD8ccYo
Check out an Op-Ed that @vidkowiaksquire and I have published with the @Globe_Post. The piece looks at the most recent Italian government calls to 'close the ports' and the growing criminalization of rescue NGOs operating in the Med https://t.co/c8yn46XGRH
🔴 BREAKING Upon arrival in the search- and rescue zone #SeaWatch 3 crew just rescued 65 people from a rubber boat in distress, spotted by civil aircraft #Colibri ~30nm off #Libya. The authorities in LY, MTA, IT & NL are informed. #DefendSolidarity
I spent last week at #aagdc2019 and the week prior at #ISA2019. It has been a busy few weeks but a really great opportunity to hear about some fantastic and inspiring work being done in the critical migration, refugee and border studies fields
