When Bafana Bafana drew 0-0 with Zimbabwe, leaving their World Cup qualification ambitions hanging by a threat, a small contingent of supporters who have always been proud naysayers almost managed to convince the country that the national team is going back to the dark ages post the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

This was the era where people proudly said they do not support Bafana. Where African countries came into South Africa to outnumber the hosts in the stands, and bully Bafana on the field. It was an era where players said and did as they pleased. South Africa and SAFA had to beg some of its own players to represent the country, or to do so with pride. Prima donnas would bemoan what they would call bad treatment, and some would even turn down call ups because of social media, the media and God knows what.

It was a bad era that seemed to have no end. Everyone had an excuse why they were not going to matches. Excuses ranging from “we do not know Bafana are playing”, “the matches are not well marketed”, “I do not support that team” and so on were said with no shame.

When Hugo Broos was appointed in 2021, the only thing most South Africans knew and respected about him was that he guided Cameroon to the Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 2017. How he did it, what he has no fight in Cameroon, and what made him leave was not a story many South Africans were willing to listen to. To make it worse, he was 69. He was “the same age as the old men leading the country nowhere in the country’s parliament”, some fans would note. But Broos had a plan and a sharp tongue that at times would threaten his good work.

Five years late, Broos has managed to completely turn around Bafana’s fortunes, but what he had to fight were generational struggles that need clear detailing.

𝐏𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐟𝐮𝐥 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐁𝐚𝐟𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐅𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬:

Coach Pitso Mosimane inherited the ill-fated 2010 World Cup squad that he worked with when he was assistant to Carlos Alberto Perreira.

Mosimane did not do badly. This is why for years, he had a gripe with the people who sacked him. His record was not bad. He led Bafana in 21 matches, winning eight, drawing nine, and losing four. But it was the draws, some against giants Senegal, Ivory Coast and Egypt that cost him the job. In that period, there was a lot of external influence that affected the team.

Bafana’s unforgivable decline post the 2010 FIFA World Cup started in the Gordon Igesund tenure. Sure, there was a Steve Komphela in between Mosimane and Igesund, but the former Bafana captain only coached in two matches, winning one and drawing one.

Igesund, revered for being the only coach to have won the league five times with three different teams, coached Bafana in 29 matches. He went on to lose 10, draw seven and won 12.

He finished top of the group when South Africa hosted the Afcon in 2013. A win and two draws was enough, then Bafana crashed out in the quartefinals after losing to Mali in the penalties.

Igesund then oversaw a disastround CHAN campaign in 2014, and that embarrassing 5-1 loss to Brazil. He was sacked two games later after drawing with Australia and losing to New Zealand. His biggest downfall? Believing in the same squad that could not deliver under Perreira, Mosimane and Joel Natalino Santana.
