Honestly, we need to give Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp serious credit for competing with that super Manchester City team under Pep Guardiola.

While City were constantly strengthening and spending huge money, Liverpool somehow managed to hang with them.

Liverpool finished the 2018/19 season with 97 points and still didn't win the Premier League because Manchester City finished with 98.

Just one point separated them.

Liverpool also lost only one league game that entire season and it was against Manchester City.

If Liverpool had avoided defeat in that game, they would have won the title.

Think about that.

97 points and no Premier League title.

That's heartbreaking.

But at the same time, Liverpool and Klopp should be incredibly proud of what they achieved because they were competing against one of the most dominant teams English football has ever seen.

There were also serious allegations against Manchester City regarding breaches of Premier League rules, which the club has contested.

Liverpool weren't just trying to keep up with Pep's footballing machine. They were trying to compete with a club operating at an extraordinary level of financial and sporting power.

And Klopp eventually got his reward.

Liverpool came back the following season and won the Premier League with 99 points, finishing a huge margin ahead of Manchester City.

So Klopp and Liverpool deserve far more praise than they sometimes get.

Competing with that Manchester City team was already a ridiculous achievement.

Doing it with 97 points and still finishing second?

That's one of the greatest title challenges in Premier League history.
